It's not a concept rooted in reality but one that arose from said circumstances. It's a concept that lumps various different people under certain terms based off superficial physical appearances, mostly skin color. A good example of how malleable the concept of race can be is by studying how early 20th century people defined race and how it changed over time. My favorite examples is Finnish people being categorized as Asian due to linguistic factors. As someone who is part of the Hispanic community I've seen my fair share of diverse people. For example I have a friend from El Salvador who looks like Jonah Hill and has the apperance of a white person but according to his DNA test he has a plurality of Native American blood, others like an Argentine I know has mostly European ancestry, many with mixed heritage and a friend from Guatemala with primary indigenous ancestry, his parents even speak a Mayan dialect. Even when looking at the past people understood physical differences but lacked the concept of race like "white people" or "black people". They didn't group various people based solely off physical appearance and instead the way they conceptualized others was more based off language and culture. For the Ancient Greeks terms like barbarian were used to describe people who spoke another language but as the Greeks interacted more with the world around them it started to grow to incorporate cultural differences, like drinking mixed wine vs neat, and even moral and political character. --- Aut viam inveniam aut faciam.
