I'm so confused how the part at 17:30ish works.

Every time they ram the shields, the shield side adds more men behind the shields... And yet it's treated like a stationary wall that gets broken down after repeated strikes, and so, somehow, despite more men, the point they're hitting somehow becomes "weak" and just... Breaks?

yes. also you should not think about realism when watching these two movies. both streaming on netflix last i checked btw
