it's basically a feedback loop

person does controversial thing -> this is praised by a few people (read: other transphobes / whatever else) -> person doubles down on it -> gets even more praise -> repeat with more extremity each time

this is how a lot of people who push weird conservative shit not only acquire big conservative bases but end up pushing more and more radical ideas. and also yeah this ending up being their entire reason for living.

Leaving aside Rowling's unquestionably horrible views, the real story is the British tabloids gearing up for a campaign of lies in the run up to the election.

First we had '7 recycling bins', then it was 'Labour will introduce a tax on meat'. Now the execrable Mail on Sunday is claiming, falsely, that Labour will imprison people for using incorrect pronouns.

Labour's position on trans issues isn't much different to that of the Tories, but you can expect more lies, hatred, and fearmongering over the next year, as the right wing press stops at nothing to try and keep the Conservatives in power.

That's not it. The right-wing press has long since accepted that this Conservative government has, after 13 years, reached the end of the road. That was inevitable. The tactic now is to try and force Labour as far right as possible out of fear of being seen as the "unelectable loony left". With Keir Starmer and the Blairites in unquestioned control of the party after the EHRC's intervention this hasn't even proven difficult.
