Definitely a lot of "why does this remake exist" vibes. I saw the original over a decade ago which was okay, but I'm not really into the story of Romeo and Juliet retold for the umpteenth time. I pretty much just watched it when I was on my classic cinema binge just to say I did. And sorry but after Hamilton, no musical can ever come close Hamilton was just the greatest experience I ever had in the theater.

This remake didn't even at least have an "immigrants we get the job done" type of theme like Hamilton or hell even In the Heights. Didn't seem to have anything new to say, it was just a technically well made movie with good production values but ultimately boring

I don't get why they use modern pronouns in a movie set in the 50s.

Yeah the movie definitely comes across as for grandfathers of yesteryear. Saw an interview where Spielberg was like he grew up with this movie and loved it and thus wanted to remake it and I was like oh that makes sense.

Some of the songs are still catchy like officer krupke and the other gang songs. But yeah others are just really dated and very "this was catchy to stuffy white people in the 40s and that's it"

I usually would agree with you, and it's why I enjoyed a movie like The Artist from a decade ago, especially the ending. But it doesn't always work. If it seems like the movie is being exceptionally pandering to that feel like say La La Land, then it's not as entertaining because it just doesn't feel sincere.

I really enjoyed how it turned out, definitely a remake that I could feel the love put in and Id watch that again before watching the original.. which I also love.

I also loved la la land and the artist

It's crazy that the original movie led to the creation of the modern J-Pop genre.

A teacher took five of his male students to see it in the theaters then got the idea of making money off them when he saw them singing and dancing scenes from the movie.
