Maybe if YouTube would stop showing the same damn ads over and over after I said the ads were repetitive. Not to mention the ads the just dont belong to the video theyre shown it.

I see you want to watch a 20 second clip.

But before that, would you like to watch a Liberty Mutual ad for the 9000th time?

Stop making ads so disruptive and I'll stop using adblockers. I used to use AdBlock Plus with the "allow non intrusive ads" option, until anti-adblock scripts became so common that I needed to switch to uBlock Origin because it does a better job of bypassing them.

I get and support the argument about how ads are an important way to raise revenue; but push too far and I'll block them anyway. And I have better things to do than come up with bespoke solutions for each individual site I visit.

Apparently youtube has at least temporarily beat ublock, even with the quick fixes applied, but the current workaround is if you refresh the page and kill the refresh before it fully loads you can watch the video without being blocked. I'm seeing word that Youtube is hyper aggressively fighting this right now - and by that I mean pushing server side updates in 5 hour increments to beat updated filters. Who knows how long they'll do it, but folks might want to start seriously looking at youtube alternatives because they're going scorched earth on this.

Youtube Premium is too expensive for what it's worth, a Vtuber membership for example is cheaper and you get more out of it and btw YT Premium is the cost of 2 of them or close to it for a couple of agencies. As for mainstream news sites, they definitely aren't worth the cost to remove ads and the ones that paywall entirely should be ashamed of themselves.

Youtube and mainstream news sites needs to just suck it up when it comes to adblockers.

We complain that the ads aren't properly done. That's why most people are pissed off. I've had times when I've finished an ad and less than a minute later I get another ad. Ergo why I use adblocker. It's even worse with YouTube shorts, where you can get a minute long ad for a 15 second clip.

I get why ads are important, but they need to be handled a lot better than they currently are.

I don't mind unobtrusive ads. I used a third party Reddit app that had an ad banner always taking up like 10% of the page. But it wasn't in the way. It didn't block other content, I didn't have to scroll past it or wait for a video to stop playing. That kind of ad is fine.

Also, folks should be aware that if we cave on ads, the very next step is forcing you to actually engage with them. Patents have already been filed for ad systems that don't let you skip until it confirms that you actually stared at the ad for the full duration.

Google has one that will determine what parts of the ad you're looking at:

https://www.theverge.com/2013/8/18/4633558/google-patents-pay-per-gaze-eye-tracking-ads

and Sony has one that will do everything from make you say the product name before the ad ends to pausing games to serve ads that you then have to "play" to finish:

TC points out that there is a paid option that doesn't have ads. Clearly TC hasn't learned from the past where companies offer a paid ad-free option and then when enough sign up, the company starts shoving ads into the paid version as well while crippling the free version even harder (if it still exists). These companies are always hungry for more profit, they'll never stop making things shittier in order to squeeze as much profit as possible.

So yeah, fuck 'em.

And, conversely of that, attempts to block a companies anti-ad blocker so one can access the websight ad free again, is also lawful. It can go on like this forever, but there are more angry nerds on the internet than there are software engineers, so the companies might want to rethink their strategy. Maybe, I don't know, vet the ads to ensure they're not malware vehicles?
