I'm more than a bit burned out on years of gross overstatement of the Burnout Paradise map size, and I can't get people to stop it. Just recently I was looking up the largest game worlds and as of September of this year sites are still listing Burnout Paradise at 200 square miles.

https://gamerant.com/open-world-games-biggest-maps/

I don't know who first claimed it was 200 but people ran with it without question ever since. How can you look at that map and honestly think "Yeah, 200 sounds about right?" The game gives you distances to places, as I recall, and those can give rough figures for the scale of the map.

It would need the entire map, including open, unplayable water, to be 14.14 miles by 14.14 miles, or 10 by 20, or some other combination of similar figures. It's just plain not. It's nowhere near that.

Even after DLC it's still just plain not. People claimed 200 for the basic day-one map. A more realistic figure is 16.6 square miles for the actual playable land, and a bit more if you count open water. That's a far cry from 200.

For those that don't know what I'm on about, ask your parents.

I know what you're on about, and it's something I ask a lot, too;

One of the more important elements is figuring out what units they are using and how they're scaling it.

For example, for Burnout Paradise, we don't know if they're using correct car sizes and dividing the map by total of car lengths, or if they're basing it on a known driving speed that is listed as, for example , 60mph and then assuming that the car is also actually moving that speed (Note: You move like 800kph in F-zero, but that in turn is only about 20 body lengths per second which if the vehicles are 10feet long would only be about 200kph)

Thank you for your revival of a discussion from over 12 years ago...

I mean yea, developers will lie about map size because people think bigger is better. I prefer Burnout Paradise to most "open world" driving games because they at least fill the world with tons of stuff to do in every inch of the map. Having a map the size of Starfield doesn't help if 90% can be ignored to get the full experience of the game.
