Here's an example: Street Fighter 2 on the Sega Genesis-list of games on the Switch's online Expansion Pack...what are these icons?

Have you noticed anything you never saw clearly before from the era of typically smaller CRTs now that we are in an era with typically larger HD screens?

CRT televisions hold a special place in my heart, but I still feel that adding scanline filters to make a game look "more retro" is stupid.

I don't really get some people's obsession with CRTs. Like I've seen people refuse to play retro games on modern screens and such and I just don't get it.

Pixel art can look wildly different. That's it really.

I have a few CRTs and use them as kind of a decoration more than anything. They do have a really nice retro feel. But I wouldn't use one as a daily TV.

Also just the fact that I still have them, and my HDTV is very old so the delay is terrible for like, Melee.

Some effects were built with CRT's in mind and literally don't look correct on anything but!

I kind of want to get a small one for my retro setup, right now I am using an old LCD monitor with Frankenstein wiring to get it all working properly lol

Edit - Oh, I do have the one from my youth as well.....it's really old, older then me. Still works and my N64 is hooked up though the RF switch.

The first one is Mobi-chan, a chibi version of the player character in Hyper Dyne Side Arms. It occasionally appeared in other games, like its a 1up in Mighty Final Fight for example. The third one is a Yashichi, which began as an enemy in Vulgus but was frequently reused in other games as a powerup, often a hidden secret one. Not sure on the second thing, maybe a chibi version of the player 2 character from Side Arms? Looks kinda similar.

There are also games that play differently. LCDs have more lag, so if you're a big fan of old rhythm games you need a CRT for accurate gameplay. Also, I believe new TVs also can't ply old lightgun games.

Mobi-chan & from Hyper Dyne Side Arms! Mobi-chan was Capcom's first (or one of their first) mascots. The other thing is a yashichi, which appears as a power-up in a bunch of Capcom's games.

This was the case for a long time but has been solved by Sinden.

There's merit to CRTs in that they're truly lagless and pixel art/sprites straight up not translating to modern displays well at all, but both of those advantages are vanishing between really good filters being developed and input lag creeping down below human perceptibility on better TVs these days. (Monitors have been there for quite some time.)

I thought about getting a CRT for my retro consoles but they're just too bulky and inconvenient. I instead got an old 4:3 LCD monitor with composite and S-Video inputs. I haven't noticed and input lag and it looks great to me

Neat, never heard of Side Arms before! I think with this revelation made clear, we can petition for Mobi-chan & to return to the Street Fighter series since they are already previously in the series.

I smell a DLC pack.

I think using CRTs to minimize input lag appears ludicrous to everyone who doesn't run in those circles.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned rhythm games. If you don't play them or only play them casually you could understandably fail to understand how much lag matters at higher levels. Whether its DDR or Guitar Hero, if you can get really high grades at the highest levels, any amount of lag is going to throw your scores off.

Realistically you're more likely to get a noticeable amount of input lag from the actual hardware you're using to play the game than from a display these days as long as you're shopping with that in mind. PS5 is especially rough in that department, fighting games immediately feel notably different/more sluggish on that than they do on PC with an appropriate monitor.
