I know the phrase as paying in full up front, usually cash. Or maybe the musical sense, as I'm a drummer, but that usually has the definitive "the pocket". The example reads as out of your league/knowledge/capability, so likely not the same idiom. ... Copied to Clipboard!

It essentially means what you have to pay for yourself.
