Really good movie, almost on par with Spotlight. I love journalism movies like this.

Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan play Jodi Kantor and Megan Twoey, the 2 journalists who wrote the story that took down Weinstein and exposed decades worth of sexual assault incidents and straight up rape. They were great in the role. The supporting cast was really great too.

I have a friend who, every time the film spotlight gets mentioned, he goes off on a rant about how it's the worst movie about the most incompetent losers of all time. And he's talking about the journalists, not the church.

It's very funny but he also has a point.

He's just a goofball. You have to know him. But now whenever I see the name of that movie I can't help but think of this dude flying off the handle.

But no TC. I haven't seen She Said

That basically every "revelation" in that movie is just publicly available info but for some reason they get all the credit for "breaking" the story. It starts with a Spotlight journalist reading an article in another publication about how the church was covering up abuse and then they just go talk to the people mentioned in that article and learn the same info that has already been available. And then the editor reveals that he just has a list of abusive priests he's been sitting on for 20 years but never bothered to tell anyone about.

While this movie only scratches the surface of the metoo scandal and weinstein rape allegations throughout the decades, it helped to give some general foundational knowledge, especially for someone who really hasn't been paying attention to any hollywood news and barely have a cursory knowledge of what happened back in 2017. Like Spotlight, it sheds some light on what exactly was happening (and probably still happening) to women in the workplace, hollywood or otherwise.

But yeah this movie completely underperformed at the box office, literally no one went to see it. I only found about it because I love zoe kazan and tend to watch almost anything she's in.

Did you see that bombshell movie about the blonde ladies at Fox news? Seems a similar premise. Not very good but it has John Lithgow being gross.

I didn't care for Spotlight because nothing about it felt like a theatrical film, instead it came across as an ABC special.

Anyway, I was mildly interested in this, mostly because I like Kazan and Mulligan, but I thought the trailer looked very mundane. Bombshell looked like a stylized spectacle, this looked generic to me.

One part that was really dark was where they were interviewing this Chinese-British woman who was harvey's assistant and she said she wore 2 pairs of tights under her clothes to "buy her some time" in case he attempted to rape her, and I was like Jesus. That's dark.

For those who haven't seen the movie, just to give context for how dark and creepy the whole thing was:
