If the police said she was suffering from a mental health issue, the police should have backed the fuck off and called someone trained to deal with the situation instead of arresting her.

She was trashing the store then struck the officer. In what world do you think any cop would witness this and just back off?

She was trashing the store two feet from the officer trying to grab her. The encounter had already started.

The video says she threw food at the cop before he tried to restrain her. (Probably to try and book her on felony assault charges, because cop.) The video doesn't say she was throwing food or destroying property before that point.

Just knowing cops and how they sour every situation they come into contact with, I'm going to wager it didn't get to that level until he tried to lay hands on her and made everything worse.

I just have a hard time believing she was going berzerk before the cop showed up and tried shit.

Do you think that the Wally World employees called her to the cops attention for fun?

Possibly the cop was randomly roaming the store and chose to fuck with her for no reason?

She was probably shouting and being disruptive, as Walmart customers can be. None of which elevates to the level of needing a cop.

And if they called the cop because she was having a mental issue, as the video states the cops said, then the cops should have called someone else instead of getting in and escalating things.

Corps and cops don't get the benefit of the doubt.

People like this: https://www.npr.org/2021/07/23/1019704823/police-mental-health-crisis-calls-new-york-city

Or just call 988, which is a 24/7 crisis line. Cop can dial them up on his phone, slide it over and just wait it out while she talks to someone helping her through whatever her mental issue is.

And I'm sure those aren't the only options.

Cops should be a last resort for anyone in crisis. If at all.

What if the state they are in doesn't have those resources? What if a phone is not available at the time?

Then what? Do you honestly expect a policemen or anyone for that would be able to consider dialing a hotline when an incident is going on realtime?

Maybe not cops, because they're not even trained in de-escalation, let alone crisis management. But onlookers? Kinda, yeah.

There's plenty of people out there aware of, and compassionate of, mental health crises in people. There's a growing movement of acceptance that mental health crises need to be addressed and dealt with by not-cops, and resources, while decentralized and fragmented, are numerous and available.

Eight states have been able to fund the 988 crisis line, and not enough others have. But, among others, the federal government are working on making that nationally available. Slowly but surely.

SOURCE: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/988-suicide-prevention-lifeline-state-funding-mental-health/

I'd hope anyone passing by would have the same capacity and idea to call a hotline for crisis the same way they would call 911 for other kinds of emergencies. And if they're not, that's something we need to work on culturally to improve.
