Supposedly he is a wolf according to urban legends. Legend has it that a Disney animator's niece was terrified of the Big Bad Wolf in the Little Pig shorts, so the animator drew a goofy looking version of the wolf. I don't buy it because this ignores Goofy's original name was Dippy Dawg.
Also, according to Carl Banks comics, the anthropomorphic animals are more evolved versions of existing animals the same way humans and chimps are members of the primate family. He drew animal ducks in the same frame as Scrooge and even had a chart of ducks evolving into a cave duck and then into Donald. Going by that logic, this would make Goofy a "Canine-sapien" of the canine family. --- "But who prays for Satan?
