Check out the pic of the reading passage that was a lesson plan for 8th graders. It's a little sexy. Is in inappropriate for 8th graders? What about high school?
PS: I think it's by Maya Angelou.

It's probably too much to spring on some kids that age without warning, or without notifying parents ahead of time so they can review the text.

I think it might be ok for high school though.

Yeah, probably.

But I would have no problem with my 8th grade daughter reading it, because I am not an out-of-touch conservative prude.

Yeah, a bit too much. It's an exert from Maya Angelou's book 'Gather Together In My Name'. It's typically recommended for college age adults, rather than preteens.

But it was caught before it ever made it to the students, so no biggie?

Definitely ok for High School, probably ok for 8th grade. You're 13/14 by 8th grade, kids are already going through puberty by then.

Everyone has different levels of what they expose their children to, or how they expose it to them, so I see no issue with at least letting the children and parents know beforehand that it's in the lesson plan.

For example, in my school district, if there's something that could be deemed controversial or "triggering", we get a letter home before the lesson starts letting parents know what will be read, and that the text is available for them to review.

I know for a fact that's what happened when my son had to read "Of Mice and Men" in 8th grade. and the same with the Diary of Anne Frank, because they had the children read the "uncensored" version.

Yeah, it was caught before it was presented. But the district is hiring 25 nosey rosies to look at lesson plans

I was agreeing with you, while also pointing out that I personally feel parents shelter their kids too much. These are 13/14 year olds who see and hear a lot worse even if parents protect them.

Oh, definitely.

I wouldn't have had a reservation about letting either of my kids read that when they were in 8th grade (they're in 10th and 12th now). We did our best to not shield them too much from most things, while still being able to explain to them that there is a time and place for certain topics.

Yeah, I remember discovering porn at age 11, but as far as school went, we didn't cover books like this until 10th grade and up. Which is why I voted that it's a bit much. This book takes place directly after 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings' which for me, was a book we covered in 10th grade.

I don't know about that. What you say makes sense, but so many kids these days seem caught up in purity contests that they're afraid to just, y'know, express opinions or desires that aren't safe from being internet canceled.

I just skimmed it. I feel like I read more scandoilis material than this by 8th grade.

We read a book called Killing Mr Griffin in 8th grade. A novel about killing a teacher. I went to a small rural school in a conservative area too. This was in the 90s.

I wouldnt even say its appropriate for high schoolers

like what is the objective here? To be sex mindful? What does that have to do with anything? An introspection of peoples feelings? To put a persons personal perspective to light during a possibly confusing moment? There are many other books that delve into this with a much richer and deeper prose tbh

Its like robbing kids of their ability to connect to things like the nature of sex by focusing on this instead of focusing how a scenario of confusion can play out beyond just one setting or event

I presume you get that during the lecture and instructional time with the teacher.
