so prob people nowadays pay much less attention to film critic reviews than during ebert's days. Iirc ebert was a big fan of many action movies and so am i. I agreed with him on which movies were good than i did with most fillm critics.

More than likely. Pauline Kael was probably the most influential before Siskel and Ebert, and now most people don't even know who that is. Leonard Maltin is up there too.

I played a quiz that asked me to name a Weimar-era German leader named Friedrich Ebert, and the site had to censor his last name because apparently Roger's estate is extremely overprotective of his intellectual property.

Maybe the most famous, I'm not convinced he's more influential than Pauline Kael.

No, Kael's long passed. She started writing reviews in magazines in the 50s, and was already established by the late 60s in the New Yorker. She started right when the New Hollywood movement was taking off, and was important in popularizing those movies and film criticism in general.

roger ebert is the most famous obviously. probably the most influential in the sense that he was on tv and probably inspired people to think they could do the same thing. which was probably a net negative since we have people like cinema sins and grace randolph and chris stuckmann now.

pauline kael, andre bazin, james agee, manny farber, robin wood, and andrew sarris were all pretty famous or influential before ebert. in addition to, like, bosley crowther, but he was terrible. there's also the french critics at cahiers du cinema in the 50s who went on to become filmmakers themselves.

i don't think people read reviews anymore which is sad. oh well.

Hopefully people got I was being sarcastic by naming someone as controversial as Armond White. I have no idea why that guy went on the deep end, but now he's just a contrarian.

Ehhh Id argue he should be more vilified for it. AVGN you can tell was more playing a character but NC problem which extents to a lot of online criticism kinda just comes off as bad.

This tracks with my personal opinion - I'll read/watch a review of a game more frequently than movies. I wonder if it's because games are expected to last much longer than the ~2 hrs of a movie, so outside investment into movies is more rare/niche? Another consideration is I also flat play games more than I watch movies.
