Tbf, plenty of English speaking people dislike 'singular they'

I've no idea what the consensus of Spanish speaking trans people is though, but I can't begin to care much what non trans people say about what the trans community calls themselves.

It's not so much a trans thing as a "use neutral rather than male language so we're not excluding women" thing. Thing is, that doesn't fit so well with their language, because just about everything is gendered in it, unlike in English where you only have to avoid a few words and there's perfectly natural alternative words you can use, or failing that, a phrase like "he or she".

Yeah plenty of English speakers hate trans inclusive language too but that's never cited as a legit reason to stop trans inclusive language.

People are quick to dismiss it with this logical inconsistency along with just accepting that latinx is a term invented by English speaking yuppies when there's nothing to support that.

Anyone's free to simply not like latinx, I think it's become corny, but the usual reasons people hide behind to hate it are illogical/dishonest.

The one person I know who uses Latinx is actually Latin American. I don't know if they're a Spanish speaker though. Most non-binary Latin American people I've seen don't seem to actually care if a person uses Latinx or Latine, though I only know people living in the USA. I say "Latine" because "Latinx" is unintuitive to pronounce.

Guide posted...

English is a constantly evolving language and the singular "they" had already been used both historically and informally. Thinking singular "they" is wrong because you were told "they" is plural in grammar school because you refuse to understand the evolution and adaptations of language is akin to thinking Pluto is still a (non-dwarf) planet. Do you want pronouns like hir and ze instead?

In your case, for me as well btw, it means "descendant of Spanish speaking people". The "Spanish speaking" part is like the main qualifier. It's literally entangled with the language either the person speaks or the language their ancestors spoke.

Bungie was even correct to say "the language we might speak" but they're wrong because it is all about the language lol I get the notion but that's just not how it works.

Yeah, it is often said to have been started or at least, officialized, by Latinos in Puerto Rico.

Origins
Edit
The first records of the term Latinx appear in the 21st century,[22] but there is no certainty as to its first occurrence.[23] According to Google Trends, it was first seen online in 2004,[11][24][25] and first appeared in academic literature around 2013 "in a Puerto Rican psychological periodical to challenge the gender binaries encoded in the Spanish language."[23][26] Contrarily, it has been claimed that usage of the term "started in online chat rooms and listservs in the 1990s" and that its first appearance in academic literature was in the Fall 2004 volume of the journal Feministas Unidas.[27][28] In the U.S. it was first used in activist and LGBT circles as a way to expand on earlier attempts at gender-inclusive forms of the grammatically masculine Latino, such as Latino/a and Latin@.[24] Between 2004 and 2014, Latinx did not attain broad usage or attention.[11]

Use of x to expand language can be traced to the word Chicano, which had an x added to the front of the word, making it Xicano. Scholars have identified this shift as part of the movement to empower people of Mexican origin in the U.S. and also as a means of emphasizing that the origins of the letter X and term Chicano are linked to the Indigenous Nahuatl language.[23][29] The x has also been added to the end of the term Chicano, making it Chicanx. An example of this occurred at Columbia University where students changed their student group name from "Chicano Caucus" to "Chicanx Caucus". Later Columbia University changed the name of Latino Heritage Month to Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month.[23] Salinas and Lozano (2017) state that the term is influenced by Mexican indigenous communities that have a third gender role, such as Juchitn de Zaragoza, Oaxaca (see also: Gender system Juchitn, Oaxaca, Mexico).[30] The term often refers specifically to LGBT people or to young people. Brian Latimer, a producer at MSNBC who identifies as nonbinary, says that the application of the term "shows a generational divide in the Hispanic community".[11]: 60 In 2016, a student newspaper described the term as "sweeping across college campuses in the nation with the intent of creating inclusion while inadvertently pitting members of the Latino community into a cultural war".[31] It received wider use after the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting.[32]

In literature and academia
Edit
Latinx has become commonly used by activists in higher education and the popular media who seek to advocate for individuals on the borderlines of gender identity.[30] Herlihy-Mera calls Latinx "a recognition of the exclusionary nature of our institutions, of the deficiencies in existent linguistic structures, and of language as an agent of social change", saying, "The gesture toward linguistic intersectionality stems from a suffix endowed with a literal intersectionx."[36] Some commentators, such as Ed Morales, a lecturer at Columbia University and author of the 2018 book Latinx: The New Force in American Politics and Culture, associate the term with the ideas of Gloria Anzalda, a Chicana feminist. Morales writes that "refusal to conform to male/female gender binaries" parallels "the refusal to conform to a racial binary".[11]: 61

Scharrn-del Ro and Aja (2015) have traced the use of Latinx by authors Beatriz Llenn Figueroa, Jaime Gliga Quiones, Yuderkys Espinosa Mioso, and Adriana Gallegos Dextre.[48] The term has also been discussed in scholarly research by cultural theorist Ilan Stavans on Spanglish[49] and by Frederick Luis Aldama and Christopher Gonzalez on Latinx super heroes in mainstream comics and Latinx graphic novels such as United States of Banana.[50][51][52] The term and concept of Latinx is also explored by Antonio Pastrana Jr, Juan Battle and Angelique Harris on LBGTQ+ issues.[39] Valdes also uses the term in research on black perspectives on Latinx.[53][54]

The point of the change is aimed at language, by some Latinos, to debinary the language of the colonizers of Spain.

All changes to language start out unpopular, especially if you ask the older generation.

I personally think there are better alternatives, but it seems somewhat popular among the latino/a lgbtq community.

Anybody pretending not to be able to use or comprehend 'singular they' in English almost invariably has an agenda at least in the US. It's not even like there's only been a push to use the word recently for acceptance. It's outright a useful word to refer to, for instance, a singular subject with an unknown gender, and has been in common usage for at least decades. Don't pretend the natural thing is to say is "he or she", have you been outside? They is what people say, they don't use three syllables to say what can be said in one.

The Oxford English Dictionary traced the singular they back to a written passage from the late 1300s, and because words typically are spoken before they're ever written down it's most likely that it was in use way before then.
