It's crazy that the 2 NL juggernauts are likely going to fall in the DS. Would this be the first CS with no division winner in it?

Arizona's record is also a bit misleading, they have an insane difference between when Moreno starts and plays compared to when they don't. With that being said, hopefully his hand is ok.

I feel like we've seen the story of every "bye" winner except Houston getting blasted in the DS before... Oh wait

Though it's been established that byes aren't good in baseball. For example, teams that sweep in the CS and have had to wait a week have near-universally had terrible showings in the WS.

we had 5 vs. 6 in the NLCS last year

Yeah, this is a repeat of last year so far, just with a different NL West team this time

Only good matchup left is Texas vs. Arizona so of course we won't get it.

I miss the '90s when the Braves would at least wait until the World Series to choke

Only the Astros seem immune to this awful playoff format.

If this trend continues, they may need to re-evaluate playoff formats. Resting mentality may also need to be revisited. If you're going to get a week off as it is before your playoffs begin, do you really need to be resting or lightening the workload for people in the final week on top of that?

We're trending toward Astros/Phillies for the second year in a row, aren't we? An outcome with no winners, only losers.

At least we might get Verlander vs. Scherzer in the ALCS. That would be pretty cool.

The only thing baseball might do is put 8 playoff teams in each conference so there's no byes at all. They can't fix it without removing playpff teams, and they'll never do that.

They need to revise the playoff format so that the Wild Card winners immediately have to play after the series. This is what the one game playoff did, it forced the "lesser" team to enter into the DLS at a disadvantage. This new format allows for the Wild Card winner to get a break and reset their rotation, so there's no real advantage for the bye teams now.

The current structure of broadcasting MLB games, even (especially) in the playoffs, is by far the worst thing about the league right now

I feel like its too soon to decide if the playoff format is harmful. The Orioles are the only AL team to lose with the bye, and they were the stereotypical "too young" team (and for all the talk about resetting the rotation, the Rangers basically threw a bullpen game in Game 1, and then their #1 starter only went 4 innings in Game 2).

Dodgers have consistently been a playoff disappointment. And the Braves have had issues, and can potentially blame divisional weirdness.

I definitely think they should reseed, but would like to see a couple more seasons (with different teams) before saying its a big issue.

All this format talk is annoying. Tbh.

If they need to do anything, re-seeding would probably be the best bet, but it's baseball, one of the most luck based sports you can play. They condense a 162 game season into a series of 5, 7, and 7(If you come in as a top team, obviously the wild cards do a best of 3 too). No amount of reworking the format is going to reward the top teams because all the teams that got in, are statistically the best teams there so of course there is going to be wonky results. It's baseball.

I mean the D-Backs this year and the Phillies last year were barely above average teams, but yes, baseball can be random and wonky. That's why you need to give the best teams an actual advantage other than "you don't have to play the Wild Card" because there's always the rest vs. rust argument (and I'd say it's more real in baseball than other sports because they're used to playing almost daily).

I do kinda hate having to play teams from the same division in the LDS. I'd be okay with them changing that if they changed nothing else.

And I get people love the underdog story. They want to see the team that barely got in to go on a run. I don't really want to diminish that aspect of it because it's fun, especially if it's your team or you have no rooting interest.

It sounds like sour grapes when it's happened to my team two years in a row, I get that, too. But seriously, nobody should want a system that rewards the Phillies twice in a row. I got no issues with Arizona or Texas.

On paper and they appear average, but Moreno in the starting lineup/starting catcher they are 50-32, and without are 27-40, a full ERA point lower when he catches, and they score one more run per game with his bat. He is been in out and all year due to injuries. I think people forgot that the Dbacks, were neck and neck with ATL and LA for the first couple months of the year, then Dbacks got hit with injuries, including Moreno.

No idea about Philly last year, but this shit just happens because it's baseball. 83 win Cardinals team for instance.

I just don't think any amount of tweaking to the format is actually going to give anyone advantage outside of maybe making the series longer, but no one wants that.

No one wants that, but if enough top teams keep losing early, you'll see the LDS go to best 4-out-of-7. It's why the NBA did it.

Well, that and more money from having more games.

I mean in my perfect world they would shorten the regular season, then re-seed after the WC round, then extend the division series to best of 7.

I agree they need to shorten the season, but we all know there's no scenario in any sport where "fewer games" is on the table, unfortunately.

What if they added two expansion teams, split each league into 4 divisions and expanded the playoffs to 8 teams?

I think it's a little silly to complain about the format when the five higher seeds that have been upset in the DS have won three games combined

Reseeding with an explicit clause that this can't happen (Outside of the case where one division gets two+ WCs and it can't be avoided, which would've happened in the ALDS this year even with reseeding if both WC series went the other way) sounds good to me.

Best of 7 LDS can go either way imo.

But even with that said, I still very firmly believe that the broadcast structure is far more harmful than anything about the format itself. Even if it doesn't necessarily impact the games themselves unless you want to get into arguments about scheduling.

At this point, I'm very firmly in "anything can happen" territory. The Rangers bullpen consistently holding small leads (especially against good teams) is new to me.

I didn't have them favored against the Astros going in, and I wouldn't have them favored against the Phillies in that matchup. But they are explosive enough on offense, and the starting pitching + fielding defense is more than good enough that they absolutely can't be counted out against anybody, in any game.

That said, their biggest problem in the playoffs so far has been a strong offensive start that falls totally flat in the second half of the game. That almost cost them today's game, and I definitely still expect it to cost them at least one against Houston.

Also I've been hurt by this team too many fucking times to get super optimistic and hopeful for things before they're actually happening.

Specifically, Scherzer went to shit after hitting Alvarez (But looked good in the first tbh). And the offense just can't get anything going.

The lineup can definitely put up 5+ in a single inning if they catch a bit of momentum, so it's hard to call the game over, but there's really no reason to think they'll find that spark tonight.

I honestly dont think Scherzer pitched terribly
