First Netflix killed Blockbuster and not Netflix is dying, at least the DVD/Blueray service.

Today is our final day of operations. We are processing and shipping the last discs. After they ship out today, your DVD subscription will be automatically canceled. You can download your DVD history here until October 27th.
Thanks for 25 wonderful years.

Are people just gonna... keep the DVDs?

Like what's the incentive to send them back?

I've always wanted to ask what the heck this service was, same as Redbox if I remember the term right. I've read the description and had people post several times and I still can't wrap my head around it in a "people pay for this?" sort of way. I also don't live in the US so have never been able to try this and see what it was firsthand.

My DVD rental history says I've rented 467 DVDs. My first rental was Awaken the Dead Shipped 04/25/08, returned 05/02/08. My last rental is The Black Phone. I'll watch it tonight and I may or may not return it depending if I like it. My next to last rental was The Batman and I found it to be a snore fest and didn't finish it.

Returns were said to still be accepted until late October and I believe I heard those who still have a DVD plan can sign up to receive 10 random DVDs after they stop accepting returns.

Gamefly seems to have a DVD rental service. I just signed up for the 30 day free trial and it said you can get DVD rentals.

It was useful back in like, 2011. They had DVDs of stuff that you couldnt stream anywhere.

I almost made it, ended my subscription last year. The number of movies they had available was noticeably shrinking

Sad day.

Rented plenty back before streaming really took off.

I wonder what they're going to do with their stockpile of discs

I really enjoyed this option back in... 2011ish?

Also watched the entirety of lost (minus the last season which aired that summer) with friends this way which was a ton of fun.

You paid a monthly subscription just like now but you just ordered DVDs to be mailed to your house through the website. There were different subscription tiers that determined how many DVDs you could have out at any one time. So, you could keep a DVD as long as you wanted but would have to send it back if you wanted to free one of your 'slots' up to be able to request another one.

I still have this service. I tried to add some movies at the end, old things from the 80s, and they all say very long wait. So 1) Im not the only one still using it and 2) it sucks that I couldnt get those movies. And they never did get Glass Onion.

I probably would still have it but the past few apartments I've had didn't have dedicated outgoing mailboxes. And my family just canceled our streaming account today. RIP Netflix.

Anyone with a active DVD sub can sign up to receive 10 random DVDs. The rest will probably end up in a landfill.

They said I could put up to 10 movies in my queue and they would send (up to) all of them. It looks as though they didnt send any of them.

probably ran out of inventory.

its a great scheme by them. the inventory is written off, and they're cleverly clearing out that inventory rather than paying disposal fees

For a time it was the best way to watch any movie you wanted. You couldn't binge obviously, but you could find practically any movie and you would get it within two days. It was so huge at one time that some post offices would have a specific bin for Netflix DVDs.

Nowadays nothing even comes close to an all inclusive subscription of movies.

It was nice having a way to watch new movies without having to sub to multiple streaming services now that everyone has to have one. I remember being told I couldn't see end game without disney+, but I received a DVD from netflix just fine. Same with the spiderman homebody movies.

That's the thing, DVD (or even VHS) rental service had so much variety. I don't if it was because they didn't need to have licences from every company or what, but it was something else. Browsing through digital menus and viewing previews is good evolution, but it'll never replace physical rental browsing for me

Mine was using the service to watch the first four seasons of it's always sunny in Philadelphia with my roommates in college. We'd get the disc and be so excited and watch them all in a day and send it back for the next one immediately
