In a recent exclusive interview with Nikkei, the President of Capcom, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, went on record stressing that game development is 100 times more costly than it was back in the Famicom era, but the price of software hasnt increased in kind. He therefore believes that the price of games should see a sharp increase to tackle ever-rising wages and the overall cost of producing these games. It takes years to build a AAA game now, and the investment needed can be in the hundreds of millions, but software prices still float around $50 ~ $7

If only they had found a way to sell extra content to a game over the years and make up that difference. Perhaps by adding new characters or outfits that are a fraction of the cost to develop to add to the base game

I mean game prices have increased VERY slowly over the years meaning theyve gotten relatively cheaper due to inflation. So he isnt wrong

How else are they going to fund MH6? Once that's done, they can sell that at $60 and the 30 million sales will cover dev costs.

It was never actually released. He meant they were going to charge us for what basically was a demo. It was supposed to come out along with the 3DS eShop.

Games used to be polished and rarely ever needing a single patch/update.
Its common practice to shit out half baked games and them fix the bugs over months of patches/updates.

It's a double-edged sword. Charge more for games and less people will be willing to take a chance on them. I know I would.

It's not a "chance". With Capcom you get quality. They can charge whatever they want, I would have happily paid $40 for Separate Ways.

Not to mention various editions like digital deluxe, champion, gold, ultimate etc to squeeze more money out of players.

Just check any rom hacking site and there's tons of bugfixes and other improvements for older games

Also if we're being honest, games that re-use assets shouldn't cost as much, right? Nah see, there has always been this weird cross section between value and cost. Stardew Valley cost like 15 bucks and I've logged hundreds of hours in it. I spent 2 months playing elden ring. Resident evil 4 took me like... 2 weeks. And the replay value isnt super high. Besides, the real money doesn't go to the people who really deserve it.

If they can get away with it, then I encourage them to try.

More likely I will just buy less games.

let them crank up the prices of bloated bullshit tRiPLe A games, i will stay the course and buy the occasional indie game or "double A" game like remnant 2 that was actually still less than 60 dollars anyway

Oh well I'll just keep playing indie games. Not only are they affordable but indie games have new and fun IPs far more often than AAA games, It isn't even a contest.

Not as many people play indie games because the graphics. But that's part of the reason I like Indies is because they still manage to make so many unique art styles and use pixel art still. I can't be the only person that thinks 3D games can start looking too samey after a while.

Also there's small teams that makes 3D games subnautica was made by 50 people but The forest was started by a four-man team.
