Had an interview today and they told me they'd get back to me in two weeks.

Wouldn't they call me right away to tell me if I'm hired or not? In two weeks a potential employee will likely be hired somewhere else.

Depends if they had to run checks and such, and how much bureaucratic bullshit the company holds itself to.

Possibly this too.

Someone who has other candidates to see and is willing to take the risk you'll find another job meantime.

I work for the state. We've sometimes offered the job to a candidate over a month after the interview. For some organizations it just takes time.

For us, there's a lot of paperwork and waiting on different departments to do their thing. For a candidate we need:
  • Live scan (fingerprint) to be done for background check (can take a few weeks)
  • All 3 references must be contacted (this one takes a while if their references never pick up the phone)
  • The Classification & Certification Section in HR to review and approve the paperwork (can also take a few weeks)
  • Personnel to provide the starting salary (usually 1-4 days)

Most places of employment I think, because it's part of making middle management feel powerful and let's suits complain that nobody wants to work when they take a quarter to tell the latest batch of applicants "no"

But the jobs you hire for probably have well above livable pay and excellent benefits.

We are hiring two spots and there are over 900 applicants. You aren't the only one, and even if you are good, there can easily be someone better. Two weeks is normal.

Without more context, we don't know if it's reasonable or not.
* There might be additional rounds of interviews.
* The position might be held open until a certain date, and then candidates are evaluated at the end of the period.
* Background checks could take some time.
* HR could be understaffed.
* Two weeks is reasonable for most professional positions.
* For a Federal job, two weeks from first-round interview to hiring decision is impossibly fast.

Lazy ass corrupt HR practices most likely. They want to interview someone better or they have to pass it up to other managers higher up who will judge you based on your credentials instead of interviewing you themselves.

In reality they should let you know by the end of the day or within 72 hours. If they liked your resume then the credentials are there. If they liked you in the interview then it should just be a matter of a background check.

Absolutely false- in almost all skilled industries.
Some places have policies that the job posting has to be up for a specific length of time, that they have to interview everyone qualified that applied (even if the decision was already made up in the managers mind).
Some people are authorized to hire within a certain budget, so if salary is discussed, they might have to take it back for approval. Sometimes the person interviewing is not the final say, so they have to compile second round applicant lists for who ever is.
Even in the restaurant industry, about half of my employers have required two interviews despite telling me at the end of the interview that theyll recommend hiring me to their boss.

Woof, wth? Thats really dumb, dude. I hope that was an entire falsity and you hear back soon. Esp since so many places near me are desperate for warm bodies period. Made me laugh when it took my restaurant over a week from application for them to call me to interview when I knew they were short staffed af. But part of that means its hard to figure out when theres time to actually get back to people/conduct interviews (still really dumb tho)
