You were not mentally aware of anything for most of the decade. You caught the best of its culture in reruns.

Enough with current 35 to 40 year Olds saying they were 80s kids.

Eh, you'd be 8 by the end of the decade. Plenty of time to build and remember core memories.

Personally, I consider whatever decade made the bulk of your life before age 12, you are that decade's kid.

I may be biased, but I think being born in 85 is the perfect point for being a 90s kid.

Started the 90s going into kindergarten and then ended the decade at the start of high school.

I was born in 76 and my first memory of a truly major world event was when Mount St Helens blew in May of 1980 at just 4 years old. I remember all the news coverage and people talking about it. I even had a relative give me a glass bottle of some volcanic ash from out there.

I could see a 40 year old still having quite a few memories from the late 80s.

the caveat I will offer as someone almost 40.

I had older siblings (those born early in the 80s or late 70s). I was around them and their friends quite a bit so a fair amount of the 80s material even though I was not the main audience. Endless reruns on VHS of my siblings favorite movies and sports and TV. It is what I grew up with. I think many folks around my age experienced that sort of cultural osmosis.

I have a formula that works better.

(Year you graduated college) round up to nearest multiple of 10, then subtract 20.

That's what kind of "xx kid" you are.

That would make me a 2000s kid when I was born in the 80s. Doesnt seem right.

As for the topic at hand, I sometimes get referred to as an 80s kid, sometimes 90s. Theyre both kind of right. I was born in the 80s so I have no problem with people referencing that, but I was also a child in my the 90s, so thats fine too.

I get that the 00's kids like to troll us by claiming to be 90s kids because the 90s were fucking awesome and the 00's sucked, I really do. It still triggers me to no end when people whose first conscious memory is from like 2007 claim to be 90s kids. I just can't help it.

born in the year x5 is the best year to be a kid of the decade that follows. you're a hybrid after x7 imo. but there isn't even a hybrid term nor would people consider it as cool for some reason.

It's not like they reboot pop culture every 10 years and it's not like people's formative years only last a day. Taking this too seriously can only end in either a really dumb and arbitrary rule or just giving in to nihilism about it.

Born in 1977, so 80s kid and 90s teen pretty much perfectly.

What is someone born in 92 then? Seems off when born early in a decade.

Only takes 3 years on average to start retaining memories. I'd say getting at least a majority of the decade in, while having memory, counts. There are some caveats with USA culture, though.

TV was huge in the 90s. For a lot of us, it was the babysitter, the dinner centerpiece, the default for when you weren't busy with something else. And a lot of us watched the same things, almost regardless of age: Animation, wrestling, music videos, sitcoms, shitty Girls Gone Wild commercials with the volume muted, so your parents wouldn't know you were awake. So you can have perhaps the widest age gap that maintains a dense, native, communicable pop culture literacy. This extends backwards, too: You could be born late 80s/early 90s and still know all about cartoons before your time, since reruns were a constant, and in many cases you wouldn't even know they were around before you.

Born in 84.

I honestly don't remember anything from my years in the 80s despite being around for more than half of it. My first day at school kindergarten was in January 1990 and that's pretty much the point where my childhood started, so I consider myself squarely a 90s kid.

Born in the late 70s... as a kid growing up in the 80s, stuff like Disco and the Vietnam War felt like they were ages ago in another time, like that was so long ago even though it was just a few years before I was born.

Now I think about stuff that happened between the mid 2010s and 2020 and half the time I'm like "that was five years ago, that felt like it happened last month!"

The years certainly do seem to get shorter and shorter the older you get. I remember when we hit 2000 and the 90s came to an end, it felt like we had entered a whole new era. It was the first whole decade I had been through and it was a huge milestone.

Then I think about the 2010s - I moved away from my home town in 2011 to where I currently live and when I think about how I've spend more than decade where I currently am, I can't help but think "gees that was an entire decade that went by since I moved?"

All of these numbers in delineations are completely arbitrary.

I was born in 80 and very clearly remember the 80s so Im an 80s kid. I also had my formative years in the 90s clearly remember the 90s so I was also kind of an 90s kid.

and I find it hard to believe that someone born simply one or two years after me is any different
