I just want to say that it's hilarious shock is getting accused of being conservative.

It's as if mainstream politicians are reverse Tankies. Tankies will blindly defend a far right oligarchy (Russia) simply because it's anti-West. Similarly, mainstream politicians will blindly defend far right activists in Ukraine simply because they're anti-Russia, even though prior to the war they were involved in violence against LGBT Ukrainians and other unsavoury deeds.

But it happened so what do you want at this point? What should Trudeau, Poilievre and Singh do? Like holy shit, I'm not apologising for them, I'm pointing out the fucking obvious that it happened, they can't time travel to make it not happen and that it was painfully obviously not intentional.

So what happens at this point is an apology, like what else would happen? Worst case Anthony Rota which is who invited him will resign.

True, and I can't fault the guy for wanting to fight the Russians after they literally committed a genocide against his people. For all I know he could have been a Makhnovist looking to avenge the cause.

Thing is though the Waffen-SS division he fought for was part of the 1943 expansion. Which means he'd lived under the Nazi occupation for almost 2 years at that point and knew exactly who they were and what they were about.

Had it been 41, which is the time period when Ukrainians viewed the Germans as liberators I could also see him signing on and maybe be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But like I said, by 1943 when he joined up everyone knew exactly what the Nazis were up to in the parts of the USSR they occupied. They didn't try to hide it there like they did elsewhere. So this guy clearly signed up either being on board with what was going on or just didn't care and was willing to commit war crimes so he could eat better.

I'm not downplaying what happened, I'm saying purely that it was an obvious mistake and pointing out what is likely to happen.

There's a MASSIVE difference between honouring somebody who you didnt know was a Nazi and honouring somebody that you know is a Nazi, a whole world of difference.

Thats actually a very good point, I missed the implications of 43. Mind you, many Ukrainians were not exactly unhappy that they got to round up/commit atrocities against the Jewish people in Ukraine. Pogroms were practically a traditional pastime.

My grandfathers family was Ukrainian Jewish, so they got absolutely fucked over by both Russia and the Nazi collaborators in Ukraine.

My issue that made me think you're conservative was purely your framing which was very suggestive of it being intentional.

I stand by my having issue with how you were framing things in your post because it was an obvious mistake, they were not honouring a Nazi, they were honouring somebody that they didn't know was a Nazi and that distinction matters a great deal.

It is not blunder at this point. It is what they have been doing for a long time. Showing how much they love the Nazis. And because the right uses that to justify them being invaded the Left has turned the other way or made excuses. This would be forgiven in no time.

Ever since the invasion began, literally any dialogue about far right militias or the weird link between canadian ukrainians and a facist figure ends up getting you called either a russian troll or a nazi yourself somehow. Most likely what happened is that a lobbying group thought it would be good timing because if anyone called it out it would be treated as usual, but this ended up being too bold not to have a larger backlash

Poland, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia were all countries that fought the Soviet Union during WWII before Operation Barbarossa. So, anyone saying that everyone that fought against Russia in WWII was automatically a Nazi should probably brush up on their own historical knowledge before criticizing others'.

Having said that, this guy was definitely a volunteer in a Waffen SS division and has been pretty unrepentant about it. The parliament's actions demand an apology and review of their vetting policies, especially since his service history would have been fairly easily available.

He also came second with 39% of the votes in a later election as a "nationalist".
But hey, if we dont think about that, how they allowed the Canadian Nazi Party to be formed in 1965, how Heritage Front revived the interest in the 90s, etc then we can almost pretend that Canada got no support for Nazis.

The USA already has prison labor, all we need is more reasons for mass imprisonment and the legal infrastructure already exists. The worse things get, and the more power that the American right gains, the quicker the US will resort to political imprisonment with this idea in mind.

Apparently the Canadian PM right before WW2 liked Hitler and turned back a ship full of refugees who would later be killed in the holocaust.

I didn't know this exact fact, but anybody should know that SS is extremely bad from movies.
