Canadians had a lot to say on social media after Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre claimed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was "demonizing" parents following recent rallies over LGBTQ+ school policies.

Trudeau took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday with a strict message reminding people that transphobia, homophobia and biphobia have "no place" in Canada.

"We strongly condemn this hate and its manifestations, and we stand united in support of 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians across the country you are valid and you are valued," the Liberal Party leader wrote.

But Poilievre responded with his own thoughts on Friday afternoon, condemning Trudeau for how he "always divides to distract from all he has broken" in a post that's been seen more than 1.5 million times.

"This time, he is demonizing concerned parents," Poilievre penned. "Parents should be the final authority on the values and lessons that are taught to children. Trudeau should butt out and let parents raise their kids."

Both comments come after thousands in cities like Ottawa, Halifax and Vancouver participated in protests and counter-protests regarding LGBTQ+ policies in Canadian schools.

This past summer, leaders in some Canadian provinces began announcing changes to school policies that would impact queer students, particularly those who are transgender or non-binary.

In June, New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs announced new changes to a protective policy for queer students. Those changes mean teachers in the province will not be required to use the preferred names or pronouns of transgender or non-binary students under the age of 16 without parental consent.

Saskatchewan Education Minister Dustin Duncan announced a similar policy change in August, where teachers must seek parental approval before a student under the age of 16 can change their names or pronouns.

Kind of a pretty fucked response to what Trudeau posted, really.

I guess, but not really. If your values are that you view certain people as lesser, that shouldn't be taught to your kid.

A LOT of people are too afraid to vote NDP because they are voting strategically, there's a reason Trudeau broke his election promise to bring in a proportional representation system instead of first past the post.

Oh, yeah, if the Liberals had actually pushed through proportional representation like they said they would? It would cripple the Conservatives. They didn't do it though since it would have also hurt them. The only ones it would have really helped significantly would be the NDP and Greens. In fact, it's possible it could result in a NDP Prime Minister one day in the not particularly far future.

"Values" used to mean things like teaching kids to share and to judge others on the content of their character instead of the color of their skin. Now (at least in the hands of right wing nutjobs), it means teach kids to be narcissistic and greedy little shits, and also tell them that they need to make snap judgments about and have a murderous rage towards people over trivial differences.

It will come back to haunt many of them. They'll teach their children to be so self-absorbed that those kids will completely abandon them when they need them most. Or they'll just realize what awful people their parents are, but either ends in the same outcome of wanting nothing to do with them in their old age.

Parents alone cannot raise a child. Teachers, friends, neighbors all play as much of a role in the growth of children. When parents seek the treat their child as nothing more than a vehicle to spread their contempt for queer people or other races they need to be stripped of their part in the raising of the child.

Child abusers should have their kids taken from them so they will be safe.

I work with at-risk youth on a daily basis.

I can promise you these changes will mean the death of more youth. Schools are one of the few places some of these kids can live as their authentic selves, and legislating that teachers and schools cannot address then as their name and their pronouns? We will see a rise in depression, self-harm, and suicide.

But none of these youth can vote so not like fuck-stain Poil cares at all.

It will be a tragic loss of life.

Do you think parents have the right to dress their boy up as a girl, even if the child says they are a boy and does not feel comfortable dressing as a girl? They cry and become sad, withdrawn, depressed, riddled with anxiety, unable to form friendships effectively? Unable to effectively express themselves for who they are as a person?
