I've been thumbing through the Microsoft court documents and some discussion threads and it's very interesting stuff. Apparently, Microsoft was going to cash it in after the Xbone and put all of their energy into PC gaming and Windows. Shuffling billions of dollars in R&D budget to strictly making games and being a figurehead in that category. Their CEO pitched Gamepass hard, and won, keeping the Xbox alive for this generation.

It got me thinking of Gamepass and the overall landscape for consoles. I wonder if any of the three would be the next to drop out of the "console wars" who it would be realistically. I'd personally say Nintendo, I know their e-shop and network infrastructure is still from the 90s. But I don't think a Switch 2 would sell nearly as well as the first, at least among my friends I've asked. What do you guys think?

From the leaks on the lawsuit MS is considering bailing on gaming by 2027 pending on certain factors. So, if one is to pull out it's them.

It's that or buying out Nintendo. That's the only way they get a foothold in the rest of the world.

The Xbox brand and PC hasn't been that far apart for a while now. They made some nice chips of late, so maybe they create a PC brand instead of Xbox. They'd also earn more money that way anyways, and they don't have to exit the video game market

What? They're planning a new console in 2028.

Microsoft in the sense that I think they're aiming to create an ecosystem where they don't need to release hardware. Kinda like what they have going on with Windows.

Microsoft. They're betting the farm on Game Pass, they still haven't gotten a solid foothold in the Japanese market and if you own a Windows PC and any modern game controller you basically have an Xbox.

From the documents, if GamePass failed they were basically ready to bail is all. If that's a pin for them, stands to reason they're first ones out. If it was true, anyway.

This, basically. Still they're pretty much the only ones that have even toyed with the idea.

Why would they spend 69 billion on Activision just to bail 3 years later?

Considering is the key. Honestly GamePass is all they care about, and it was basically "if it fails we're out."

Also because they don't actually need their gaming division. Even that much money wouldn't be an enormous loss for them if they pulled the plug. Microsoft as a whole is on an entirely different planet compared to Nintendo or Sony.

69 billion is a lot of money to spend on something you're not committed to.

It is.

But in all reality it was probably a document purely intended to try and garner pity. Still in my books if they can toy with the idea openly still means they'd be the first to fold. Not because of money, but of fat trimming if the time comes.

honestly i doubt microsoft makes another system. they lost every console gen. only the 360 was competive but the ps3 ended up still beating it despite sony being way behind the first few years. they're already 20 million behind the ps5. switch will probably sell more than both combined.

i think a switch 2 will still sell pretty decently. probably not the 130 million units the switch has sold but if they keep it cheap and make it different enough from the switch and not fall into the same problems as the wii u i think it'll probably still sell like 80 million or so. but think it does need to be enough of a graphics upgrade to make it look way better than the switch. probably some new gimmick needed for it as well.

Xbox owns shit like Minecraft and now the COD line. They don't actually need the Xbox brand. The Xbox brand has historically survived off like 3 things: yearly shooters including Halo, yearly Sports games, and Minecraft, which the last of them isn't exclusive to Xbox. Other software don't earn the Xbox brand any money at all to even make up the basic marketing/hosting/production costs, which is why their CEO thinks only hardware matters.

Nah, only hardware matters for Xbox cuz their brand fails to actually make software profitable. They bought Activision and Minecraft because they were one of the only things giving the Xbox brand value to begin with. Because the management doesn't like or know the gaming scene as much as they think they do

Seriously, none of them.

Microsoft is going all about the gamepass by now, and the XBox is too relevant for that. The gamepass sells the XBox, and the XBox sells the gamepass, and this is going to be even more true with Activision in the future.

And Sony and Nintendo are both doing too good to stop consoles too.

If actual hell breakes out, I would assume that Nintendo would be the first to hit a fate like Sega, but that's completly unrealistic right now.

I'd argue that Game Pass makes it easier for Microsoft to drop the Xbox console. They'll push Game Pass to cloud services and everything under the sun.

They would still need to sell some casual hardware without the bloating of a windows PC for the TV.

Sure, in the worst case it's just some cheap streaming box for cloud gaming, but cloud gaming is just terrible for online multiplayer.

Yeah until there's a box that a casual can plug into the TV that Microsoft can install their own store on making an Xbox is gonna be needed.

PlayStation and Nintendo are never going to allow what Microsoft wants.

They can't do this unless Sony and Nintendo agree to let them put Game Pass on their consoles.

They should release the Xbox OS as a discrete thing you can install on any PC.

they have the software on lock, but their hardware and decisions wrt it constantly suck.

microsoft certainly won't out of sheer stubbornness and nintendo is just gonna keep nintendoing

Samsung are already including Xbox Game Pass on their TVs, I'm sure that Microsoft are courting other TV manufacturers. I'm sure Chromecasts and Fire TV sticks already support it. I'm pretty sure that Microsoft are banking heavily on cloud gaming for the future.

Microsoft for reasons most people stated already.

Also Sony and Nintendo's profits are heavily tied to their console business. Both companies would have to do a lot of pivoting to adapt their businesses with no consoles.

On the other hand, consoles are a side business for Microsoft that has been unprofitable a lot of time.

Valve's always had that niche covered for the PC landscape (ie. Steammachines, Steamdeck.)
