I liked playing black and reacting to what the other player did.

I only ever played casually though.

I start with moving Pawn E2 to E4.

I watch GothamChess more than I play myself, but I do fancy a game every now and then, and tactics puzzles on the crapper.

I do that move sometimes but I feel like oncoming pawns too big a threat and you have to retreat too soon.

Ya, it can lead to that.
But it can screw them up for a bit.
It can be good to flush them out.

I've always been intrigued by the game but have no idea how to play it with any skill. I started those chess learning apps several times but then just get bored. It feels like the game is just about memorizing moves/algorithms.

In a way this is true for top competitive scene. Openings have been analyzed to hell and back. All endgame positions with up to 7 pieces have been solved. Oh you can't memorize them all? Too bad, unless you're a natural like Paul Morphy.

I guess as a novice playing with friends it wouldn't be that bad, but I still need to know openings and such presumably.

You don't need to concern yourself with that haha. For casual play you can vastly improve your game just by following these steps:

1. Train yourself to recognize mate opportunity at any given time. Chess puzzles are good for this.
2. Train yourself to recognize who hold the initiative at any given time. Initially it's White but Black can seize it easily. Example: Black deploys h-pawn and push back White's incoming bishop. Black has slight advantage now because that h-pawn can clear the way for h-rook one step ahead of White.
3. If you hold the initiative, keep developing your pieces into their territory. More pieces = more mate combinations. Do not trade pieces if not necessary.
4. If your opponent hold the initiative, force as many trades as you can. Less pieces = easier defense. Do not go into a losing trade if you can.

Yes, but I play a much higher stakes game. One where real people are on the line. (Dramatic anime face reveal)

Real answer is, not usually. No opening move, don't know much about chess strategy.

I know how to play, or I should say I know how each piece moves and what's required to win... But I never play and I'm bad at the game.

As white, I tend to go King's Pawn first

As black, it depends, but I heavily favor the Scandinavian defense

Idk how
