The topic about souls fans got me thinking about how often I see a lot of Berserk readers completely miss the point of the plot, and Guts as a character overall. I've seen a lot of comments lamenting Berserk making a pivot from a dark revenge fantasy to more of a fantasy adventure, complaints about Guts going soft compared to the black swordsman arc, and overall just bitching about him being defeated by Griffith and currently just giving up hope.

The complaints mostly stem from the fact that we have less over the top apostle killing in the recent chapters, and more downtime with Guts realizing exactly the position he's in with the power gap between him and Griffith. People want less introspection, more big sword man swinging his big sword, basically.

But the entire point of black swordsman and by extension, lost children and conviction was to highlight that by chasing revenge, Guts didn't actually earn anything or make any forward progress. Godot spells this out word for word for him in Cracks in the Blade: he had Casca and Rickert by his side post eclipse, and he chose to walk a path of revenge instead of staying to protect them both. He chose selfish desires instead of doing the difficult thing and confronting the pain he was feeling.

Berserk was never supposed to just be a revenge fantasy like a lot of fans want it to be. Killing Griffith is a secondary objective to him and Casca healing from the immense trauma they experienced earlier in the story, and holding on to their humanity in a fucked up world. The character growth and development is the point, not the over the top violence.

tldr: Berserk fans have terrible media literacy

I've only read/watched a small portiom of the series and I understood that.

I gotta facepalm at ones who read the whole series or even half and don't get it.

The entire series had basically been beating people over the head with "Rage/Revenge is not a good coping mechanism" forever, but that's all they really want from it.

I mean, the action scenes are great so I get it, I really do, but character growth arcs are equally important in my books, if not more so.

The entire series is Guts regaining his humanity and trying to find joy in life, especially in such a difficult world.

Nope, she is taken by Griffith while Gutts can't do anything against him.

Honestly, I've been saying for a long time that if anyone deserves the killing blow on Griffith, it's Casca. Unfortunately, Griffith sharing a body with Casca and Guts son complicates matters greatly

A bit, yeah. They like black swordsman era Guts, when not even Guts liked being black swordsman era Guts.

I thought that the golden age arc did a good job of showing that Guts, despite his hardships, is actually a very caring and compassionate person and that the rest of the story is supposed to be him regaining that sense of humanity that was taken from him. I guess the point didn't land for a lot of people.

It also seemed like the series lightened up a bit as Miura's mental health improved. Old Berserk was a bit too edgy imo.

I never picked that up with the fetus. But man, that makes some dark sense.

I didn't get it either until I started buying the deluxe manga editions and did another read through. Having mostly remembered how much of an almlst uncaring monster killer he was, I almost forgot how caring he could be during the Golden Age arc. His interactions with Casca after The Advent were proof of some vestiges of said humanity, but I never really picked up on his regaining it until like, the VERY recent chapters.

I totally missed Casca getting kidnapped, though. What a bummer. I was hoping that they would keep her away from any further damsel in distress storylines.
Goddammit.

I'm hoping that they're not setting Casca up to be a damsel in distress. Shierke seems to be using astral projection to head toward Falconia where she'll probably meet up with Casca, and the group of prostitutes that were taking care of her during the conviction arc are also in Falconia. I'm hoping her going there was just a set up for her to meet back up with that group and cause some mayhem from within. The chapter before last showed her pretty effortlessly destroying some soldiers, and she was shown after regaining her mind that she's still a very skilled fighter. They need to not waste her as a character.

Pretty much any grimdark series will have a bunch of edgelord fans genuinely think the grimdark setting and tone is cool, awesome, and the only thing worth caring about, and will push back against any remotely light-hearted moments.

Yeah, making Casca into a Jill (FFXVI) would be a tremendous waste. Honestly the biggest gripe I had with Berserk over the years is what they did to Casca's character.
