Has nothing to do with "spying on the homeless." Has everything to do with monitoring suspicious activity. The dude destroyed my neighbor's property, so the dude is no longer an innocent vagrant. Get over it.

To be fair. We're at 250+ posts now. So firing back with "you haven't read the topic" is expecting a lot. You're better off just letting the topic die instead of continuing this back and forth with every new person that disagrees with you

Maybe its me, but this is honestly one of the weirdest things Ive ever heard someone do. Without more context behind it, its not normal to seek someone out for simply wearing a red shirt and ringing a doorbell.

Being cautious when theres a good reason to is understandable. But this comes off as overkill and being a wannabe vigilante.

It turns out the dude actually destroyed some of my neighbor's property and put some weird marks on some of my property. Calling the police ended up being absolutely justified. IMO, if a neighborhood watch exists at all, then the response from said neighborhood watch needs to be consistent. Most "incidents" will be interactions (at least in my experience from having lived here for 2.5 years), but then there are ones like this where it's justified.

The dude is giving an unbelievable amount of benefit of the doubt for the homeless dude. Which is the main reason people came in with guns blazing out the gateway.

I don't care about 500 topics. As has been stated many times, the point of making this topic was just to have a discussion about what happened. And if people had actually read the topic, we wouldn't have so many people just ignoring details just to frame it any way they want.

My neighborhood does not have doorbells. I have had people tell me that growing up here -way back 25 years ago- they knew everyone on their block.

I do not care about your opinion on using a drone for neighborhood watch. I do not. I have said this many times in direct response to you saying this. I get how people would consider it weird since I would imagine very few people use a drone for that purpose. That does not matter to me. At all. The drone is a handy way to monitor suspicious activity over a large area in a non-confrontational manner. Neighborhood watch isn't the reason I bought the drone, but it has turned out to be useful for this purpose. Please acknowledge that you've read this. It would be nice to be able to stop answering the same concern from you in this regard over and over. It is not my job, nor is it my concern, to make something that people rarely do seem normal to you. I acknowledge the fact that it is not normal and it is rarely done.

As far as how often I do it, it depends. The last time I did this was months ago, but I wouldn't say it happens with any regularity.

If something reports suspicious activity in the neighborhood group chat and:

• I'm at home
• I'm awake
• I'm not doing anything else important (Work, for example. One Piece is not important.)

Then I'll get the drone out and take a look.

There have been numerous times where they'd be talking about suspicious activity in the group chat and I'm at work or at home working (day or night). There have been numerous times where they're talking about suspicious activity in the group chat and I'm just sleep. Or I'm about to go to sleep and I don't feel like getting up to get the drone out. Or the batteries are just dead because I forgot to charge them for whatever reason.

The patio furniture incident was March 28th. That was specifically the last time I used the drone for neighborhood watch. Someone reported a car that seemed abandoned in the neighborhood. By the time I flew my drone over there, some dude had driven it a bit down the road and was stealing patio furniture from someone's house. I took pictures of him doing that.

He noticed my drone, finished stuffing the items in his car, and then drove away. I flew my drone over to the entrance of the neighborhood and got a picture of his license plate before he left the neighborhood. I sent the pictures to the owner of that home so that they could report the license plate as well.

Is there an actual neighborhood watch you're a part of, or do you just do it because?

It's a just because kind of thing. I don't think I would join something where I was somehow obligated to do it. We decided to start doing this as a neighborhood because it takes police a bit to get here. I wouldn't say it takes absurdly long, but the suspicious people are often gone before they get here.

We can at least get more details for them even if it doesn't ever amount to anything. There are times where I'll drive around instead of using the drone, but using the drone is easier since I can go up to 60m in the air where I live. Also, someone who is determined to commit a crime may damage my car without a care in the world. I'd rather not have that happen, lol.

Most of the actual incidents we have in the neighborhood is people walking around checking for unlocked cars to steal stuff from. I just keep my car in the garage to avoid that. When I lived in an apartment, I ended up getting a garage to keep my car in. I stupidly assumed it was safe in there, so I would have it unlocked. Someone got in, most likely because I may have left the back door open and they got into my car. They stole the hard drive that it uses to record stuff, so I couldn't even go back and see what happened.

Do whatever you want with your drone. But I think what you do could cross the line between reasonable concern about your neighborhood, paranoia and possibly invasion of privacy of others.

Yeah, it definitely could violate privacy concerns. I realize that. It's just something you have to keep in mind when you fly a drone in general. I've flown it at lakes in the area on a number of occasions. Sometimes people will ask me to take pictures or video of them with the drone and I'll oblige. There are a lot of rules you have to follow when flying a drone.

• Must be within line of sight
• If the drone is over 250g (0.55 lbs), then you have to register it with the FAA. My drone is 249g, but I registered it with the FAA any way.
• You must be aware of and abide by no fly zones and restricted flight zones. My house is in the flight path for a military base. That's why flying my drone around this area is restricted to 60m and below. In "unrestricted" zones, the max height is 400 feet. The drone I have will automatically abide by no fly zones and automatically abide by altitude limits based on the GPS location. There are also structures you aren't permitted to fly over, like power plants. You're also not allowed to fly within a few miles (I believe) of an NFL game. Someone did this with their drone and they got fined $20,000 by the FAA, I believe.

So yeah, it's a lot to keep in mind, but having a drone that will follow the rules for you makes it easier.

Nah, I've chased birds in mid flight with my drone, too. I've also monitored birds that were just walking around or floating on the surface of a lake. This drone is rated E for everyone.

A person ringing a doorbell at night is NOT cause to send out a drone. And it is not a case for the neighborhood watch. It is certainly not a case to call police on. Homeless person or not.

Doing anything but minding your own business makes your actions filled with paranoia influenced by watching far too many crime procedurals.

I just really hope this is a joke topic. Because if it isn't, then I'd be rather speechless.

My next door neighbor actually just came by to talk about last night's incident. He has some light bulbs set up around his driveway and the dude from last night took and broke one. He said he actually cut his foot on broken glass that's in the same spot where the dude was, and now there are some marks on the concrete on my side of that alley near my AC unit.

My neighbor has him on camera bending down to pick one up, and then you can see him on camera bending down and likely breaking the glass on the concrete.

I think the biggest question here, and one that no one seems to be asking is... what was your kill streak to get the drone??!

Also, while it's true breaking bulbs is technically destruction of property, I feel like you are way overhyping what he did in an effort to justify your and everybody's actions that night.

He broke some bulb(s) on a driveway late at night. Cost what, $60-100 to replace, if that? It's obviously not ideal, but it's not like he took a sledgehammer to the dude's car. Breaking bulbs on the driveway at night when nobody was around and trying to sell it as "he's no longer an innocent vagrant!" is honestly kinda gross. The words you're saying may be accurate, but the enthusiasm of which you say them does not match the value of the actual property destroyed.

It's like a series of X marks on the concrete next to my AC unit. Not sure what that's about. My neighbor said he's regularly in the alley pulling weeds and didn't see those marks until today.

I think it comes from having been a tightly-knit community for 50 years between 1900-1950. But maybe someone went around stealing them.

It might be a nice public service to put up maps with night-time illumination telling people how to get out of the neighborhood. I am thinking the man either wanted to ask may I use your hose or how do I get out of here.

Another neighborhood quirk where I live is no outdoor faucets. Most buildings start on the side walk and the original lot set up is from post Chicago Fire where you have a garden space separating buildings. Maybe no outdoor faucets is a Czech thing? The neighborhood was Bohemian before 1900.

I'm not forming an opinion on the matter either way because I don't know. I apologize in advance for the long answer coming up, but I feel like it's important to tell the whole story so you get the point.

While we're cool now, this is the same neighbor that angrily accosted me because he assumed I sent some sales person to his house last year. Said sales person told him I gave him the keys to my car and let him drive it as some weird sales tactic to gain rapport with him, I guess. Instead of asking me whether it's true, he confronted me about it in front of his whole family. He said he had me on video talking to some sales lady while standing on his driveway. I asked him to show me the video, but he said he couldn't find it.

What he was actually talking about was the guy who sold me the security system for my house when I first moved in... I gave the dude a ride to the grocery store since we both needed to go there, but I'm not about to just hand my car keys to someone I just met. Dude was just lying to him to make a sale.

And then literally about a week or two after that incident, Tesla was installing solar on my house and dropped something off my roof right onto his AC unit. I was hesitant, but I told them I'd deal with it. I didn't want them to get delayed with his... weirdness. I was inside the house when it happened, so I didn't see what they dropped. He demanded that I tell him what they dropped on his AC unit. I insisted that I didn't want to make a guess because I didn't know. He kept insisting, so I said maybe it was a hammer.

He got mad and said it couldn't have been a hammer. I just went back to telling him I don't know and left it at that. A couple weeks later, he rang my doorbell and was mad at me again. He apparently told the company that does maintenance on the AC unit that they dropped a hammer on it. They told him it couldn't have been a hammer, so he told me that I shouldn't have told him it was a hammer.

I've learned through dealing with a jackass IT director at my old job that sometimes it's better to just not argue with people like that and just move on. He said it may have been because he was on drugs or to do drugs (I may have misquoted him), but I just shrugged my shoulders and moved on without paying it much attention. I have no clue what would cause someone to want to take one of those, let alone break it... But he did show me the video of him doing it.

He wasn't "doing absolutely nothing." He destroyed some of my neighbor's property. There's no longer room to argue that he was some innocent vagrant who just needed a shower. Based on what was known last night? Sure, that was a possibility. Not any more, though.
