I'd like to go some place with a good view of Mt. Fuji, maybe visit a monastery. Something specific that I'd like to see is the Great Buddha of Kamakura. It looks beautiful in all the pictures I've seen of it and probably looks much better in person.

Kyoto is great. I got to go there. I think it depends on ones priorities too. Tokyo is probably best for people obsessed with modern Japanese pop culture

For traditional culture you go go Kyoto

I enjoyed Kyoto way more than Tokyo, tbqh. If I go back again, Id probably want to give Hokkaido a whirl for a much different experience.

Haven't been to Japan yet. Want to visit Kyoto and Osaka way more than Tokyo. Also definitely plan to see Ama no hashidate, it's apparently a 2 hr train ride from the Kyoto region.

Kyoto is one of the most charming places on the planet. Lots of tourist sites which are easy to get to.

Osaka is just kind of another big city, but Doutonbori is pretty neat. Tokyo is a bit too much gray concrete everywhere too but I really liked wandering around Asakusa. Hiroshima is pretty charming. Okinawa is very cool if you have a rental car and find some secret beaches where you don't have to pay exorbitant fees just to enter.

I haven't been to Hokkaido, Shikoku or Kyushu so if I had to go somewhere new I'd go to those places.

Osaka is fun as a second urban area with a very different feel and different foods to try compared to Tokyo. A lot of people enjoy it more than Tokyo. It does get crowded with tourists.

It's also right next to Kyoto, which is the number one tourist destination outside of Tokyo. That (along with the nearby city of Nara) is where you go if you want to see some of the Japanese historical and cultural stuff like temples, shrines, etc.

Nagoya is a city between Tokyo and Osaka. There's not much in terms of sightseeing but if you go there for a day there are lots of great foods to try like miso katsu, tebasaki (chicken wings), Taiwan ramen (great if you like it spicy), and miso nikomi udon.

There's also a place a little out of the way between Tokyo and Nagoya called Shirakawago that is GORGEOUS in winter, seriously it's like something out of a fairy tale.

Hokkaido is also beautiful, especially in winter. It's also really cool and refreshing in summer. If you like fish and seafood, it's the best place to eat fresh crab, salmon, scallops, and a bunch of other things. It's also the number one place for dairy and a lot of vegetables. Overall I think Hokkaido may have the highest quality food in Japan. Some parts get busy during tourist season, especially its main city Sapporo. But it's very big so there are lots of great out of the way places you can go too.

The south island of Kyushu is great if you want to go to an out of the way place that has beautiful scenery but isn't crowded with tourists. I especially recommend Miyazaki Prefecture. It has amazing food and beautiful ocean views.

There's anothee sizeable island east of the main one called Shikoku that has similar vibes to Kyushu. It's very rural and great if you want to see beautiful scenery and enjoy nature. But it doesn't have as much in terms of things to see and different foods to try, so I would recommend going to Kyushu over Shikoku.

Okinawa is the most distinct from the rest of Japan in terms of culture and food. It also has lots of beautiful beaches. It also has a lot of American-influenced food because of the military bases there, although coming from outside Japan I doubt that's a draw for you. Also it can be very crowded with tourists, especially if you go at the times when Japanese people like to travel like early May, the two weeks surrounding New Year's Day, and late July or August.
