Have seen at least a few people on this site say it has no effect

It probably has some minimal effect but let's be real the purpose of speeding tickets is mostly as a source of revenue for police departments.

I think speeding laws should be automated through speeding cameras in order to take officers away from doing that task.
Speeding cameras (and just designing roads to force drivers to be slower) will and has made differences in reducing pedestrian injury from cars.

I mean, I definitely notice the difference in how much speeding goes on around here (where enforcement is rare) vs Auckland (where it's very common).

This could all be eliminated with smart cars that have limiters built into them that dont allow you to bypass the speed limit.

I think it will have a big effect for a time. Once you pay out you are going to go slow in that area for awhile. Over time if the area is not constantly enforced everyone will start to speed again.

As a maniac of sorts on the roads, no. Obviously if I see one ahead or know a notorious hiding spot I'll slow down, but then speed right back up again.

It only has an effect if the fine is high enough.
There should be zero tolerance for speeding way over the limit.

Fines should be proportional to income and car value of the driver.

Extraordinarily negligible. Outside of places that are known speed traps, nobody is going to really take heed.

Eliminate the fines entirely, and replace it with a weekend at the county jail.

Most if not all states have point systems, so if you rack up enough infractions your license is suspended. The immediate impact of fines hurts the poor more for sure, but well off people can't keep doing it forever without consequence either.

i am sure they have some effect but probably not that much. someone going 5-10 over (assuming it isn't a hospital or school zone) should never be getting tickets, its the reckless lunatics that should be.

That we shouldn't live in an IoT police state where a cyberattack sets everyone's cars to max 0 mph? Or where a camera on every roadway tracks the faces of women in cars to issue a warrant for their arrest in case they're trying to get an out of state abortion?

After about a week of "[contractor] made eighty bajillion dollars from speed cameras", there will be a mass revolt, just like those damn red-light cameras.

Look at what's happening in London, with "congestion zone" cameras:

If the complaint is the specific process of how it's done, then that's a conversation to have.

To be clear, I think the best way is to design the roads in a way where speeding is just difficult to do.

Automate speeding cameras also help though. And if reducing the amount of police interactions from speeding violations is accomplished, I'm willing to make speedsters angry.

Others aren't willing to make that tradeoff though, so cops are involved in speeding violations and pedestrians are left to survive in dangerous roads.
