Why the hell can one single Senator block the military like this?

Also, at this point it wouldn't surprise me if he's getting paid by an adversary to do this.

Even the Republican Chair of the House Armed Services Committee is calling him out now. Tuberville says this is just about abortion (mixed in with rants about "wokeness").

We'll see what comes out.

The democrats should put the votes to the floor for the major appointments. They have the ability, but they refuse to, and if they really cared about military preparedness they would get the highest command pieces confirmed at least

It will take time, it will clog the floor, but if this is truly a dire situation it can be at least worked on. Tuberville is a little turd, and it is absurd that one person can do this. There should be much more hardball being played, but all I keep hearing is "this is hurting us so badly!" yet no one is attempting to do...anything.

The Senate has no Speaker to run the show. In the House, the Speaker schedules everything down to the minute.

In the Senate, a Senator can do/not do anything (within the Constitution) unless 2/3 of their peers vote to force them to do it (cloture). There are enough Republicans (+ wildcards Manchin & Sinema) to prevent cloture. So Tuberville can block promotions.

The Constitution requires the Senate to vet Flag Officers in order to prevent a President from packing the military with sychophantic officers. One of the reasons the US hasn't had a military coup.

Flag officers therefore owe their position to demonstrated loyalty to the Constitution (confirmed by the Senate) and the process - not any president. Milley is a perfect example, as there are many reported incidents where he told Trump that the military could not do some of the things he was asking of it. Colin Powell did the same with Bush Sr. and Clinton.

And thats likely his true motivation. Keep them open in the event Trump is President again and the GOP has a Senate majority, so Trump can pack the top of the armed forces with people who will answer to him and him alone.

Interesting. Never occurred to me, but highly possible.

That's a strategy beyond Tuberville's mental capability but probably not beyond what he would take part in.

Its because of the time it would take to do so. Votes like that are very time consuming and prevent the Senate from doing other business. Also do not try to spin this and blame the Dems. There is only 1 person at fault for this and he's from Alabama.

So, my husband is actually one of the more than 300 flag-select officers being held up, and this situation sucks. But the Democrats dont want to negotiate with terrorists, so to speak, because then it will become a common strategy to control the Senate.

My husband is expected to take on his new role, confirmed or not. But he cant do some of the training; a star is required to be eligible. He wont be seen with the same authority by those who will be looking for that star on us uniform. He wont get paid at his new rate, and he wont get back pay if/when the confirmations ever come through. Tuberville doesnt care about that, but it is a big deal for our family! Hes a Reservist, and he has to leave his (high-paying) civilian job because its impossible to do both. Flag pay would have helped to bridge that gap. Without it our finances will be tough. (Fortunately we have a lot of savings/net worth, but not all of the people are in that situation.)

Its terrible, and the Democrats are terrible at messaging. The policy HAS NOT CHANGED. It is the same policy that was in place during the Trump administration. The only thing that has changed is the fall of Roe v Wade, which means that some members now have an additional health care item that is not available where they are stationed.

This is a terrible situation for these people and our families. And voting one-by-one is not a viable solution. That would tie up the Senate for months, which is exactly what the Republicans want because then nothing else can get done.

Having acting people doesnt work either. The same Senate rules that prevent them from getting confirmed also prevent them from being able to do the job. We are approaching a crisis situation if someone doesnt get Tuberville to relent.

Well there's only so much I can hear for months "this is crippling us!" and no one doing anything, when there is a way for them to do SOMETHING. Make it painful for the GOP as well and delay anything they want for these confirmations and maybe they will start pressuring Tubey. But all I see is a whole lot of nothing happening. It's clear this public pressure campaign is doing fuck all, so DO SOMETHING ELSE

Yeah, DoD doesn't do the "acting" thing, unlike some federal agencies. Overall a very good thing (it used to be very rare), but unfortunate in your situation. I hope things improve soon. For all of us.

Senators have a lot more individual power due to the way the Senate works and its size. The longer terms have historically made it so that while you still get bullshit things get done; based on the idea that its the fact theyre constantly running which leads to the looney types.

Even with Tuberville the Senate is way more functional than the House.

One of the carrots I hear being used to try sway Tuberville is the Space Force (btw, a name a 6 year old would give an agency) of all things. They need a headquarters and other facilities and Tooby wants it all in Alabama. The USAF already has a nice War College there.

The Biden Administration (Secretary of the Air Force) has floated all sorts of places except Alabama to get this asshat to bend. We'll see on this one.

That's a large part of how bases get placed, and why so many are in the South (in addition to lots of cheap land there).

He's doing it because he honestly believes all the replacements and promotions are only there to push a "woke" agenda. He basically wants to sift through them all one by one because of this. Heard him say it openly in a recent interview.
Abortion is his smokescreen.

So a large part of Senate Republicans would vote to overrule Tubervile? I ask because A) I haven't looked deeply and B) I don't know how often a senator gets overruled by his own party members..

Every Democrat needs to line up and spout the same line over and over like Republicans do.

'Maybe he doesn't know this, but senator Tuberville is helping china and Russia by doing this. Or maybe he knows that and that's what his intention is. I don't know.'

Every single Democrat needs to say that over and over and over and over and over until this stops.
