Pretty interesting, that picture.
As the series went on, the importance of the characters flipped.
Those in the back of the picture became bigger parts of the show than those in the front.

TNG is episodic while DS9 is serialized. DS9 has a lot more inter-crew tension and angst at times and is darker with Sisko getting really comfortably with breaking the law and having his crew keep quiet about it even early on. So in terms of themes, tone and commitment, the shows offer different things

Yeah, often touted but really that's not entirely true.
It started out pretty much "episodic" and remained that way for the bulk of the first 2 or 3 seasons.

To this day it is being denied by the writers to have been .....influenced ....by a certain other space station series that ren at the same time, was a hit with SF fans (at least back then) AND WAS truly serialized from day/episode 1....
How awkwardly coincidental. ..../s

Even in the earlier seasons, continuity is way more important on DS9 with regards to things like Bajoran politics and development of the Kai Winn plot, even if it's not "see every episode in a row or you have no idea what's going on". Once the Founders are revealed serialization ramps up

In S4E11 "Homefront" it's revealed that Dax has broken into Odo's room while he's regenerating, 4 times, to move every piece of furniture in his quarters slightly out of alignment, because it freaks him out.

Even on my first watchthrough I thought this was fucked up lol. Jadzia out here exploiting alien OCD for her sadistic amusement. I mean we're talking about the dude who has been forced to exile himself from his own people after yearning to meet them for so long, why you gotta do him like that

DS9 is so good. It's still kind of amazing to me what a fantastic cast they had between the main and major recurring characters.

There's also a lot of good character development through the course of the show. By the end, characters like Bashir and Nog had come so far from what they were in the first season.

It's still mostly episodic, but the difference is that unlike other Trek shows where they fly away at the end of episode leaving consequences for other people to deal with, DS9 is stationary. Which means they are stuck dealing with the consequences of whatever they've done.

I rewatched the entirety of DS9 for the first time since it aired the finale during early COVID. It is so freaking good, and holds up just as well today as it did in the late 90s.

TNG will always have a special place as the Trek I grew up with, but DS9 is simply excellent.

S7 Dukat is a walking shell of the character unfortunately. I've read claims that the writers didn't like how popular Dukat was as a fascist so they went out of their way to dirty him with the cult plot line and such. IDK if that's verified though

The last episode's Dukat part is shonen-tier

Yeah, I was seriously expecting Dukat to exact revenge on Damar at some point, but the next time they see each other after it happened, Dukat is just like "eh, water under the bridge". Sure, he'd gone completely insane by then, but still.

That's another thing that always bothered me. Despite the fact that Dukat became completely mentally unstable by the end, the way how he suddenly decided to became a pagh-wraith worshipper kind of came out of nowhere.
Like, the only motivation I can think of there is that he wanted to punish Sisko and oppress the Bajorans, but even in that regard his cultism is pretty far-fetched if you consider the rest of his character arc.

Warp-capable space ships need to refuel and resupply too. And it makes for a good public transfer/meeting station.

Not only that but they provide safe harbor from "pirates". Many transport ships in the universe are rather old and slow warp wise. Even fewer are combat ready.

Dukat as cult leader made perfect sense to me. His only real motivation beyond power for its own sake was for the people around him to recognize how special and what a genius he was. For him, it was more important to convince Sisko he was right than it was to actually beat him.

In that context, a cult where he is worshipped is the perfect place for him. The connection to the Pah-Wraiths was just a means to an end for what he really wanted-everyone to worship him.

DS9 had a lot of great storylines, but this was probably the one that was least well executed. But to me the concept actually made a lot of sense when Dukats extreme narcissism is taken into account.

Has there ever been a show with a deeper bench is fantastic supporting characters? Dukat, Nog, Rom, Eddington, Garrack-who is one of the best characters in Trek history, and was not even in the main cast!
