Front wheel drive cars handle pretty good but I really like having my truck and 4 wheel drive for our bad winters. The weight and long wheel base are great for stability, the ground clearance is nice for driving through drifts and the 4 wheel drive just really makes it quite easy.

As long as you dont get overconfident and remember 4 wheel drive doesnt help you come to a stop easier. It certainly makes going from a stop easy though.

Subaru Crosstrek
People fucking LOVE their Crosstreks in Alaska. Easily the most common vehicle I see on the roads during winter.

Theyre cool, but I would rather my full sized Outback. You can fit so much stuff in it

Depends. But either way, if there is too much snow, you will need to just not go to work.

Outbacks are just longer Crosstreks which are just lifted Impreza Hatches

But yeah Outbacks are a better choice since you can carry more and theres a V6 option

I do find the 4 cyl version to be very capable, too. The downside to the Outback is that its heavy and has AWD, so I average a little bit over 20mpg.

Trucks are bad, as they are rear-wheel drive. As a result, all the power is going to tires that have no weight atop them.

Weight essential for keeping the tires from slipping in the snow.

(Of course, you can just keep your truckbed filled with a few hundred pounds of dead-weight to avoid it... but that's a few hundred pounds of dead-weight. Meaning it'll kill the fuel economy on a vehicle already bad on fuel economy.)

Or get one of the trucks that truck guys say arent really trucks. Honda Ridgeline, Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Of those three, the Ridgeline is the best because Honda. And it has a big ass trunk under the bed that has drains so it can double as a cooler. Santa Cruz also has that but the bed is small as hell so go Ridgeline.
