Started a new playthrough a few days ago. Damn, this game is awesome.

Everyone likes to talk about how "easy" it is, but if you aren't using a guide there are many places where you can wipe. Also, there are just too many things that are impossible to know without a guide. Like, the game is much harder if you don't have matra magic and aqualung.

Not to mention Emerald and Ruby. I've beaten Emerald before, but never Ruby. Beating both are my main goals, as well as 3 sets of all the master materias.

Using Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris. If I have to use someone else, Aeris gets preference. Planning to use Yuffie later in the game, and probably Vincent as well. I'm going to beat the weapons legit, not using the overflow bug or anything else.

The one time I did beat Emerald I used the 7777 trick to take out 50% of it's HP, so I will NOT be using that trick this time.

I don't want to use the W-Item glitch, but... historically... I have a hard time avoiding it. I think they drop from tonberries, so maybe we can collect a bunch that way.

We'll see how it goes! Just got the Tiny Bronco.

Using Hero drink 4x will double your stats except HP &MP in battle, it makes the Weapon battles easier.

Or you can farm the stat sources in Gelnika for permanent boost.

Farming sources is part of the plan, for sure. IDK about maxing every stat, but definitely will spend time down there.

I usually do Wutai before TotA, but I'm going to do it later this time and let Vincent get some screentime since he doesn't really have a quest.

At the Great Glacier, everyone's favorite part.

Anyway, Great Gospel is awesome and it made the Wall-Monster boss very easy.

Pretty hardcore that Aeris prays and literal angels show up to bless the party.

If Aerith didn't die, the peerless stat from her great gospel could trivialised emerald and ruby.

Thinking about Ruby Weapon; I kinda feel like the developers were saying "beat him without using KotR" considering the reward. I might try to do exactly that.

It's a game that actually deserves it's hype and acclaim.

Back in the day, you had to pause, go to work, then unpause 9hrs later.

That's not a glitch. She can only steal a set amount of Materia and prioritizes some above others, so those were your leftovers after she stole as much as she was able to. All it means is that you carry around too much Materia lol

Was thinking about this game the other day. It really is something sepcial. I think the only jrpg that possibly tops it is Chrono Trigger

Yeah, hot damn. That requires a ton of materia.

Its one of the most overrated games of all time, but its good.

I do however find it insufferable to play without fast forward, as every fight starts and ends with 5 seconds of wooshy whoosh twirly sword etc. thats the best way I can describe it, but you know the animation Im talking about lol. Animations in general take forever and really drag the pacing down.

If you do that quest when it's first available, then that is very likely a lot of materia at that point. I've almost always pushed it into disc 2 where you will probably have more than enough materia to have left overs.

Playing RPGs nowadays definitely benefits from speed up, I agree. Even the publishers seem to understand that, with how they include auto-battle.

Yes, but Im specifically calling out FF7 as an egregious offender. They really wanted to show off those PS1 graffix, so the animations are super drawn out, and there are a shit ton of them. Compare to FF2, which has so many cutscenes to show off those PS2 graffix, but in battle when you do an action, its very snappy, with fast, minimal animations other than for Limit Breaks and summons.

the catch 22 of getting great gospel is you basically need to overlevel, which then throws the balance and flow of the game off. Especially with cloud since he is a mandatory party member.

Not really. Earning new Limit Break levels are based on kills, not experience or level, so you could easily grind levels 1-3 out in a low EXP yield zone.

I played this game when it was new and I was in my early 20s, it was an incredible experience and was probably bigger to me than any other single game in my life with a possible exception of seeing Super Mario bros for the first time as a child in the 80s...

I will never play Final Fantasy 7 again, because it can never be better than how it lives in my memories.

It's going to be hard for you to truly appreciate this game now , since at the time it was so new and different and so many parts of it have now been done so many times they've become standard gaming tropes. None of this is your fault, it's just how popular culture works.

I played it through for the first time a few years ago and I would like the game a lot less without fast forward. Not even just the battle animations, some cutscenes are just drawn out massively. I remember one in the end dungeon area where the meat of the scene happens, but you then watch every single party member slowly walk off one by one and holy shit it took forever even at superspeed.

It's really not though. It's one of those games that gets easier as it goes on. It's really no harder than FF6.

Yup, i grinded limit break on areas wirh 6 enemy spawns. Like on the bridge area before Corel or field outside rocket town. By the end of disc 1 everyone has their lvl 3 limitsm

When I did my perfect game I had Meteorain before leaving on the train (had to grind gil to buy 99 Iron Bangles).

Its pretty fun. Its a rebalancing mod that ups the difficulty, changes some spells, has other handicaps you can toggle (no experience or gil) and you can play two story pathways - the original, and one with alternate bosses and disc 1 plays out very differently.

Enemy skill it's self is OP if you get all the skills. Sleep works on a lot of the monsters in the battle square including some of the harder final enemies. As long as you can use enemy skill, you can win no matter how bad the handicaps you get. You can also pick up Beta the first time you see the midgar zolem. You need to get the elemental materia from Shinra HQ, link it with fire in your armor and use a tranquilizer to inflict sadness on the party. Bio also helps to get the zolems health down faster without triggering counters.

One of my favorite games, though a chunk of that is nostalgia.

Is there a mod or hack that lets you get some late-game materia early on? I always feel like by the time I get cool stuff like Double Cut, the game is basically over anyway.

Ive never looked into the modding scene, but Id be shocked if there wasnt a Mod where Aerith doesnt die, so you could have Great Gospel during the Weapon fights, and thst is worth a playthrough at some point.
