Speaking of should have caught on sooner.
It took me WAY too long to realise Double was pretty much a Yellow Devil throwback.
Devil run through Japanese alphabet = Debiru, Double = Daburu.
He's a yellow humanoid who can change shape and if you use his weakness, parts break off and attack independently.
And on Zero's side of the story a certain Yellow Devil related character gets referenced. And then in X5 there's this one boss...

huh, never caught on to that. according the mega man wiki, there's been no word of god confirmation on the connection but his split cutters using the same kanji as the devils split attack.

Do they ever explain X losing these power ups between games?
In classic you can kinda imagine them naively going "The world is saved, you won't be needing all these weapons anymore! Farewell to conflict forever!" every time.

Is there some rule against integrating armor parts (except the dash which he keeps) into his design?

My headcanon is that they get too damaged in fights between the games.

That's how it usually goes in the manga to the point it's almost worthless for him to get new armors.

I mean it's easy to forget but the first X game had a handful of megaman games prior to it then that refined it into what it was.

The series formula as a whole peaked then. At that point only its characters and story could have saved it but the series kind messed that up after X4.

I thought the first 4 X games were great. X5 was started the downward trend for me. I've never played beyond 6 so I can't fairly say anything beyond that point

This is the correct opinion

You can really tell that the series was supposed to end with 5, and that 6 was just a case of well hey, weve got the assets/IP all ready to go, why not milk a bit more out if it? Its an unfinished, rushed, buggy and poorly though out mess.

It is, however, still very much a MMX game, and - I will die on this hill any day - has one if the, if not the, best OSTs in the X series, rivaling MMX1 easily.

But I remember the flak and hate far more for X7 upon its release than X6. I get it. It makes sense. You wait all that time for MMX glorious debut on the PS2 and in 3D and get that. I could see being extremely disappointed.

I feel like now though that time has passed and both games get looked at in retrospect, X6 is getting the criticism and attention it deserves. I think it escaped some of it at release due to being quite under hyped, and similar to X5, if not significantly more flawed and weird.

You're right that 5 was clearly suppose to end it. The ass pull for zero in 6 was exactly that. An ass pull. Inafune had moved on to the zero series so any canon timeline for the maverick era had to be pushed back.

I wouldn't pick X1 over most of the games with playable Zero.
Dr Wily clearly played more video games than Dr Light and knew what was fun.

Is Zero cool?
On one hand he gets the job done.
On the other hand he acts like this, has a questionable looking design and I think he recently killed UMVC3 for good with that EVO finals.

if you can even call that an FMV. it was mostly just stills and very little animation. i realize capcom really shit on their budget but man. i've only played this one once EVER before so i'm probably gonna get surprised by things i've forgotten.

My favorite bit of that intro is the part where they introduce Douglas as Doglas.
Oh and I guess I like the stills because they were used in videos for a bunch of MMX musical arranges a decade ago. The X2 one with the X Hunters is the best one.

there's a hunter medal achievement for seeing all endings. wonder what RNGesus is going to do to me when i get to that point. isn't it a little messed up they even included that?
