True innovation, breathtaking and brave to come up with something most phones have had for a decade lmao.

Apple simps will lap it up though, thank you Apple for inventing USB-C!!!

No, the new feature is if you don't use the apple USB-C your phone will charge and transfer data at half the speed.

Apple is forced by the EU to do it, and was activly lobbying against it.

They made arguments why their Lightning connector for iPhones is better for years.

Well, ofc.

Otherwise they would lose money from the "Made for iPhone" certification, and cheep stuff is made by the devil.

I thought they weren't getting announced until next week? A lot of talk over the cameras being pretty tasty on the 15 Pro Max.

I'm curious how they'll market it though. Apple never plays catchup to anyone, they always have to be bringing "new and innovative" things to market. It's not a high PPI display, it's the "Retina display". It's not VR, it's "Spatial computing". How will they market a port that's been on their competitors for the best part of a decade?

They're going to cripple data speeds by model and cable if they can't restrict charging speed by cable.

I feel bad for any content creator that cheaps out and forgoes the USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt that the pro models will have.

Apple users are going to blow this horribly.

They're going to try to keep their 5 watt cubes from 10 years ago and use a to c cables.

They'll also buy whatever cheapo gas station charger they can find and then still complain about charging speeds.

I've never had to do that.

I'm fairly neutral on the Apple/Android thing. But making things like chargers universal seems like it makes life easier for people. Might cut some waste too, if people can just re-use older stuff.

Yes, this is correct. Apple virtually never been the first to do... anything really. They didn't make the first PC, GUI, MP3 player, smartphone, tablet, all-in-one, online music store or pretty much anything that they pride themselves on. You'd never know that if you listened to their marketing though. I genuinely like the Apple stuff I do have, but I'm under no illusion that it's been done before.

For users? It kinda doesn't. Smartphones especially have an issue with 1st gen tech often being really bad even if the concept is good. For example, foldable phones have improved massively over just a couple of years. The first under screen cameras and fingerprint sensors were dogshit. Indeed, I think Apple's strength was taking an existing idea, polishing out the issues and marketing it as something desirable.

From a marketing standpoint? It's a bad look to just say "We now have a feature that our competitors have had for years!"

Because Apple has a high price tag and is known for being restrictive and proprietary with their hardware and software, especially compared to Android, though that has lessened dramatically over the last decade. So the stereotype is you end up with a less functional product with a much higher price tag than the market equivalents, whilst being told Apple innovates years old features from other products.

Want to circle back to this as its a completely disingenuous post. Sure compatibility in general is a positive that even when you factor in theyre being FORCED to do it by the EU its still a net win for the consumer. However, its the main selling point of the most expensive phone on the market, a near decades old feature, that theyre purposely nerfing on all but the most expensive version of the phone. But please, carry on defending it and being purposefully vague.

In the end, it's just the same old annoyance that "thing I already have" is made useless by "thing I just got".

Lightning cords will merely join those old fat 30-pin cords, and Mini-B, and Micro-B, and that weird one Nokia used for awhile, all in that same box of old and redundant USB cords in the garage. Let me know if you ever find an old Gameboy link cable in that box.
