its very very very unlikely

super mario bros has been torn apart down to its code and so heavily examined its very unlikely new exploits exist

unless some one some how finds a way to break the max speed limit on mario himself (which seems very very unlikely) this is it

Controllers are overrated for 2D platformers. I get the nostalgia, but you can hit more buttons at once with several fingers on a keyboard than you can with your thumb on a controller.

Thats why I can play Megaman so well. I can dash, jump and shoot all at the same time. Maybe thats why I enjoy Megaman & Bass. Playing that on a controller would suck.

The current warp tas is from 2011.
The current warpless tas is from 2018.
I would be surprised if they hadnt looked into memory manipulation by now.

Whoever gets it first will be the champion of SMB1 even as others tie it. Whoever does it, if they are smart about it, can use it to launch themselves into a bigger spotlight.

There's going to be exploits that aren't possible on original environment accurate emulation but nobody really cares about those. The game's assembly instructions have been manually parsed for all possible time saving opportunities.

While improvements to the human accuracy might still come out over time, the TAS is the ultimate limit.

It's not necessarily 24 frames. Mario speedruns are measured in framerules and a single frame of missed input can cost you multiple framerules.

Isn't 8-4 the exception to that, in that the speedrun ends the instant you touch the axe rather than, to use the common framerule metaphor, waiting for the bus?

Some of the maze skips are framerule dependent iirc. Framerule losses really only happen when you lose control of Mario i.e. going up and down pipe animations and level end sequences. If you can't make a transition during a certain frame rule, the game will wait for another frame rule to begin before doing whatever it needs to do next.

I kind of agree with this. Im not saying that playing on keyboard doesnt require a lot of skill, but I, personally, think its possible to setup a keyboard to give the runner an advantage (not talking about left+right inputs or other disallowed things). I used to watch a SMW Kaizo runner, and he got a specialized controller that he said helped him out a lot because the buttons were setup in a way he wouldnt get incorrect inputs anymore. Basically, he kept accidentally hitting up on his d-pad, and the new controller made that basically impossible. To me, thats an advantage. Now, Im not really a member of the community, so I have no say in rules. Just voicing my two cents in the matter. I just think there should be a different category for emulator versus console. They both require extreme skill to run at this level, but in my opinion, there are enough differences in game play.

The keyboard is accepted for various reasons, most notably, believe it or not, because of physical injury. The nes controller is just not very ergonomic and hitting some of the inputs requires you to do unusual things to even make it possible like holding the controller upside down and pressing the buttons with your knuckles.

As long as your environment perfectly replicates original hardware it's accepted.

Maybe someday there will be an "actual original hardware" category but it seems needlessly punishing. Many former WR holders have quit Any% SMB1 because of pain issues.

It's TAS Tied until 8-4, where framerules don't matter. Both This runner and one other have tied the TAS on 8-4 once before. It is 100% doable that the TAS can be tied but it will take the run of the gods and won't be tied for a VERY long time afterwards.

That run was a third of a second faster through Levels 8(1-3).
You will never see it broken like that again. We're talking hundredths of a second in time savings.
