If this has happened in America, that toddler is NOT going to have a good life after that. The dog presumably will, if saved. If there is an afterlife, their child can join them in it earlier without suffering through modern existence without a family to support them (adoption is most likely to occur for basically newborns). Also I think society will collapse within 20 years. The dog will have his happy life and pass on before then. --- I am the Hunter of Topics. You have to choose whether to do nothing, or to kill someone who would not otherwise die to save more on another track.
