We don't know what it is. its not cola and its not root beer.

I don't recall seeing Dr. Pepper on lids Big Gulp is 7-11? I think? I've never been there so maybe why. I do remember seeing lids every now and then with a RB tag even though I don't think Root Beer is very popular anymore.

I can understand why Dr Pepper would have a tag, however, as it's the best drink.

Mr. Pibb uses the pepper button even though it should use the ... Cola?

So that the person who ordered it knows which one is their drink.

Probably because Dr Pepper isn't cola.

From Wikipedia:

"Dr Pepper was a frequent player in the 1990s antitrust history of the United States. As part of these activities, economists and the courts have weighed in with the opinion that Dr Pepper is a "pepper" flavored drink and not a "cola". In 1995, the FTC blocked a merger between The Coca-Cola Company and Dr Pepper on grounds that included concerns about a monopoly of the "pepper" flavor category of soft drinks."

So "Pepper" doesn't just mean Dr Pepper, it also includes brands like Mr. Pibb.

It's also worth noting that your lid says Pepper, but that's not universal. McDonalds (which has supply deals with Coca-Cola) has a lid that says Diet, Tea, Other, and "P" (feel free to insert jokes here).
