Like with most sports you actually have uninterrupted play for 30 minutes at a time. The athletes continue doing the thing and no one is screaming about energy drinks at you every 3 minutes.

Just wanted to put that out there if you didn't know that.

I was in the US for part of the 2012 Olympics. And that's when I learned that even their commercial breaks have commercial breaks.

'This commercial break is brought to you by Geico, Pepsi, and Taco Bell!'.

It really is taking the piss.

3-4 hours to play a 1hour game is really stretching it out.

True, but other countries put their ads on the players instead. You basically spend 3 hours watching players running around as an advertisement.

Not a fan either but I think a slogan on a players shirt is less distracting that a complete halt to play so that I can watch an Emirates ad.

In Australia, at least for our rugby league, we pretty much only get commercials between tries. The video ref and all that is sponsored by KFC and shit, but you'll be watching the game and the only time you'll see a commercial is after someone scores or if it's halftime. And if it's after someone scores, it'll be like a 15 second commercial cutting right back as the scoring player kicks for a conversion.

I was gonna call bullshit on TC, because Aussie sports have a lot of commercials, but I do remember hearing that the frequency of commercials in American sports is fucked. It's not so much that we don't have commercials, it's that the frequency is significantly less fucked than American sports.

American sports (and also Canadian sports) are super friendly for gratuitous ads. Things happen, then long stretches of nothing. Sometimes we have nothing for ads.
Football, basketball, baseball, and hockey - all sorts of opportunity for ad breaks.
Soccer needs to realize that.

At least in basketball, it's over in like 5 seconds either way and the game moves on quickly. In soccer, that motherfucker is rolling on the ground for like 5 minutes while the clock ticks down. It's so dumb to watch

American football was basically built for television, as its rise coincided with the rise of TV. Basically just a platform for ad breaks.

It's really glaring. I can understand how people outside the US find it shocking. Yes, shocking. I'm American and after a stint abroad, thought "when did this shit start?" But it's always been that way.

One of the reasons I stopped watching American football all together. There's like 13 minutes of action surrounded by ads across 3-4 hours.

The game timer in soccer games actually sucks tho.

Each half is timed at 45 minutes but it never stops, when the ball goes out of bounds or even when a player gets injured. It never stops. So when the timer runs out the ref adds a few minutes of extra time (which never matches how much time was actually wasted) and then officially ends the half basically whenever he wants.

That helps avoid commercial breaks but its not good as a spectator.

I think European football leagues (most familiar with EPL, Serie A and Ligue 1) have a decent balance of advertizing on uniforms. Latin American football clubs can get crazy, like European hockey.

Noticed a few MLB clubs are sporting ads on the shoulder this season though. Not sure when that started. NBA clubs have had one on the left shoulder quite a while.

It's never bothered me that the clock doesn't stop with every stoppage. That kind of precision seems less important in a game that isn't made up of set pieces.

It's what you're used to, I guess.

They're cutting down on the time wasting this season. Having stuff like 11 mins of added time and dishing out more yellows for wasting time

I don't watch much TV outside of sports because of the commercials, and even when I do watch sports (at least once a week during the NFL season), I find it pretty torturous because of all the interruptions. I don't mind the idea of commercials but they just show too damn many of them.
