I don't think Jon Stewart really qualifies as a late night host. The daily show was a scripted parody show.

Id say the Colbert Report was the scripted parody show. Daily Show was a late night talk show.

My personal tastes lean heavily toward stuff like Conan but as an old guy I definitely was a Carson fan as well for the old school tv.

Also I was a really big fan of Insomniac with Dave Attell. Really funny stuff.

Letterman for me.

Carson is likely the best though

Craig Ferguson, hands down. Conan might be one of the best people to uphold late-night TV as an institution, but Ferguson was great because of how he didn't care for late night television as an institution. He swore, he made a habit of tearing up his notes, he spoofed the concept of the late night talk show sidekick by getting a robot skeleton puppet. But on top of that, he was unflinchingly real in how he talked to his guests, and he was arguably a more serious host with the most to say when the chips were down.

I've brought this up a couple times today, but this is a twelve and a half minute monologue he did in the wake of Britney Spears' breakdown where he discussed his own substance abuse, and there's a story there about on one Christmas morning he was going to go and kill himself. The barman of the pub he'd stayed at saved his life, ironically, by getting him so drunk he forgot to do it. This might be one of the greatest late night show monologues ever:

And I know that people have an issue with Jimmy Fallon and how he breaks easily and seems to want to be very cute and precious about it, but when Ferguson breaks, the laughter is that sort of loud belly-laugh that booms up through the ribcage and gets you laughing along. His bits, and the parts where be screws up, are genuinely hilarious:

Conan is great, but Ferguson feels somewhat antithetical to what Conan stands for and it's some of the best late night television that there's ever been. Craig Ferguson all the way.

Conan. I only really watched them when I was in school, but Conan was hilarious. I probably watched hundreds of his episodes while the other late night guys, I maybe watched a few dozen at best.

Conan was just quirky and different from the others. It's a shame he never got a true chance at being the top guy.

Never really watched him on TBS, since by then, I was over late night shows.

I thought he did, but flopped miserably

He was only given 6 months or so (i believe) before Leno decided to unretire and take the slot before the tonight show and push The Tonight Show back 30 minutes. So conan said fuck off

Then Leno retired and they gave it to Jimmy Fallon shortly after.

I feel like Conan rubbed management the wrong way or something so they did their best to tank him.

Was hoping some Dave Attell fans picked up on my comment. Always thought his show was really underrated. Hes not my #1 but he was damn good.
