Meh. Much improved with mods, but vastly inferior to 3 and NV.

I actually played Fallout 3 to death. I replayed it like 10 times, each with a different stat allocation. It was the first game I had seen like it. I also played New Vegas, which improved a lot of things from 3.

This is where 4 falls short. It's an improvement on 3 while falling short of some of the things NV or mods did. Also, unlimited levels sounds good in theory, but all it means is you have the same character by end game. In hindsight the old stat and perk system was better.

So, in short it's a good game but it just falls short.

It was a good game. I enjoyed playing it, even without mods.

The gameplay was good, which was a major plus point. If it had gunplay like FO3 or NV it would not have been successful.

It was okay. I got bored with it after forty or so hours, so it was worthwhile. But compared to FO3 and NV, both of which I put over a hundred hours into, or Oblivion or Skyrim, both of which I put way more into, it was a disappointment by comparison.

I had a lot of fun with it despite its flaws. Had lots of fun with the settlement building, but I love games like The Sims so I dug it. The gun play is certainly better, but New Vegas is still better in every other way. Still, just because NV was better doesn't mean this one totally sucked.

Other than the gunplay and settlement building, it's hard to care too much about it nowadays. The main story is massively underwhelming and the dialogue system sucks, so you're usually just left with manufacturing your own fun by collecting stuff, leveling up, save-scumming for legendaries, etc. It's fun to a point, but it always just makes me pine for New Vegas.

It was fine until you end up doing the same missions over and over again. I ended up having more fun doing that glitch that gets you unlimited build points at that broken stadium. I decked it out with tons of defense and just sat in it shooting anything that came close. I had this really cool rifle I made that I didn't even need VATs for (which I thought was made pointless in this game). It had an amazing scope and I could kill most things in a shot or 2.

no, it's not. even fallout 76 is better and more of a fallout game.

it's a linear, pointless, empty, soulless attempt at growing the fallout franchise. but it definitely failed in many ways. railroading, handholding, lack of variety. they thought they were really clever with writing and instead failed miserably. everything in the game means nothing and the main plot is one of bethesda's worse.

Yeah it was great

The criticisms really don't hold water and largely come from the fact it's Bethesda. It's got quality of life improvements on pretty much every factor of Fallout 3/New Vegas

If the game was identical but made by CDproject Red, it would be considered a masterpiece by the internet

It's true tho

The only things I can think of that 3 and NV did better is

  1. Have Liam Neeson in it
  2. Have skill checks in conversations
  3. Edit: Also have Ren Auberjonois in it. FO4 would be dramatically improved with Ren Auberjonois and Liam Neeson kicking about.
Massively improved companions
Massively improved combat/shooting/weapon modifcation
Updated in graphics
Massively improved quality of live changes (Ability to leave conversations at any time, looting doesn't open a new screen unless you manually ask it took) The flow is amazing
Introduction of a Jet Pack
Completely revamped Combat Armor into a whole new game mechanic
Actual use for Junk items into core gameplay (Rock-It Launcher doesn't count)
Massively improved standards of Voice Acting
Increased vareity in map locations and random encounters.
Removal of God awful weapon/armor degredation
Being able to keep playing the game after completing the main quest

Also has less bugs and glitches than 3 and NV did but that's like being the nicest murderer in San Quentin so not really worth mentioning.
It's just an all round great game and it's sales and critical reception demonstrate that

But it's Bethesda so the internet hates it for reasons that don't stand up to scruntity.

It's just an all round incredibly solid game

Yeah, I dont get this take.

The fps part was kinda crap, I still always used vats. If you want rpgish and fps both the destiny(s) had better gunplay play. Not to mention better straight up fps games.

I always live those games for leveling, looting, and building a home base. Honestly only ever do quest lines to unlock gear and locations and tend to drop them before finishing if the rewards dry up.

Of course the missions being fun/interesting is always a plus. In the Beth fallouts the locations being top notch was generally more important to me than the stories tied to them.

The main distinction is that I would say that Destiny's gunplay isn't good: it's great. "Good" as a distention is a way to say that it is notably better than the average game on that front, and as low of an impression as I have with FO4 (mostly because I only bought it for the RPG aspect) its gunplay was absolutely substantially better than the average game. Similarly if we ignore the good versus great aspect that I mentioned already it's still perfectly fine to have two games with the "good" label while also having one being strictly better on that front than the other. Rating something isn't a "winner takes all" affair where the second that the other thing becomes trash. Otherwise it would be the same as with Destiny as there are plenty of games that I would say that have better FPS aspects than Destiny.

Yeah, my wording was vague.

When I said not to mention better straight fps I meant games besides destiny (which I only threw in there for the rpg aspects), in other words lots of games that were better fpses if that was your draw, not just best/crap.

Also when I said play those games for levels/loot/etc I meant FO3/NV/4.

I disagree with this

Putting aside how quickly you can get it in other games, unlike the other FO games you play a dude who already has military training and they make out the Power Armor to be a big deal including a dramatic boss fight.

They made it feel very special and introduced a great game mechanic to boot. Introduced to the player through both plot and gameplay interwined well.

More over I don't see how FO4 would be improved if you didn't get the power armor until after the BOS turned up halfway into the game "To make it more special"

i couldnt complete a low int (3 or less) unarmed run in fallout 2 without getting the power armour cuz i kept dying in vault 15. i was locked out of most content because of my character's dumbness so i was stuck with either the leather armour or the 1st version of combat armour which doesn't fare well against a bunch of gun wielding raiders. id barely reach one dude to punch before i got shredded.

after i got the power armour (took a lot of savescumming cuz i kept running into enclave patrols) i breezed through vault 15. so even in the early games power armour was OP af and super special

I agree with you there.

They wanted to add something to make it so there was a cost to using Power Armor... Then gave you so many God Damn cores that there was no cost whatsoever. Making the whole thing pointless.

You can just feel the design by commitee "We need to have a penalty for using this thing." "Nah the casuals won't like that." "Well let's compromise."

You'd lose nothing by removing the Fusion Cores in FO4. They added nothing to the game.

But the power armor itself was a great game mechanic. It really changed the shooting, gave you a reason to keep returning to base (Armor degredation actually done well! :O Shocker!) but sacficied speed and mobility.

Then you get the jet-pack and don't go back.

I've seen this sentiment a lot when people list negatives about Fallout 4. But I see it as just an introduction to what you could have. Like how some RPG's start you off at level 100 only to rip away all of your power after the intro. Give you a taste of late game content so you can look forward to it. They give you power armor right away, but it takes a while before you can actually use it regularly.
