Most 64 games really show their age when it comes to gameplay. Even all time greats like Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, LoZ:OoT, etc. Star Fox doesnt have that problem even with that controller. A truly amazing and timeless game.

I'm mad that they never made a normal star fox for GameCube, wii, wii u or switch

Star fox only has 2 (or 3 if you count the unreleased Starfox 2) real games. Everything else is a lame spinoff

I feel like it's a genre thing.
Shooters from that era, like shmups, rail shooters and light gun all essentially peaked by 5th generation, so those games sustain their quality except for graphics.

They're a genre i love from all generations, especially twinkle stars, cotton, panzer dragoon, Gradius and like any light gun games. Their controls are basically a button or two, so that part can age well.

It boggles my mind on how Nintendo refuses to release another Star Fox game like this. Just keep the game play the same and up the graphics. That's all it would take. The formula doesn't need changing.

Out of curiosity I decided to see if my cart was still working. Turns out all the date is still there. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/0/7/AAROENAAEzRv.jpg

i really don't understand why they don't just make another one that's exactly like it, but better

i mean, even SF64 itself is basically just SF on SNES remade nearly exactly like it, but better

repeating that formula makes almost too much sense. and sounds like it should be easy, but then why can't they get it right if it's so easy. boggles the mind.

Yep. Its crazy. They kept releasing SF64 and people bought it like hot cakes. The original formula was fun. Do that. It should be like how Mario Kart just kept refining its gameplay. I dont know why they went away from that. I think the only time they tried the old formula again was Star Fox on Wii U? The problem is that no one had a Wii U. The game looked really fun but Ive never played because of obvious reasons

Since you brought up Mario Kart, it's worth noting that Nintendo has flatly refused to make a new F-Zero game despite it also not being too difficult to make.

I actually never played F-Zero but Ive heard its praises for years and years. Its wild that they dont make one. Hell even Captain Falcon is really popular in Smash Bros. Are they really that afraid of F-Zero possibility cannibalizing Mario Kart? They didnt fear that when Diddy Kong Racing, another timeless game, dropped for the 64. Both were amazing

The voice acting is so good in Star Fox 64. Theres a reason everyone remembers all the dialogue 25 years later.

I played one or both of the sequels (Assault/Zero). The one where Pigma is the main villain for no reason. The story was terrible, like an elementary schoolers idea of a dramatic adult plot line. SF64 benefited greatly from keeping the story and characterizations light and breezy, relying heavily on stereotypes.

The SNES one is a classic

It may have been neat for its time, but it really did not age as elegantly as 64 did. It's blatantly polygonal graphics-wise, framerate is quite choppy in some sections, and some stages were rather brutal in difficulty (looking mainly at that "wireframe bars" section in Sector Z or whichever stage it was, where you were dead in basically 2 collisions, maybe 3; I just remember them ripping huge chunks of health off)

That was Sector Z

It's not so bad once you realize you can keep slamming on the brakes and none of the bars will hit you

In fairness, I kind of get it. Personally I have no issues with a games length, as long as its fun and has good replay value (whether that value comes from different paths to take while playing, in-game unlockables, or just because its so damn fun) but I could see the kiddos today throwing a temper tantrum over a short game. I beat the game so quickly! Not worth the money. I dont replay games, gotta move on to the next game

Doesnt make it right, but from Nintendos point of view, I get it.

God, Adventures is such a good and under appreciated game. Its fun to play, it has that early 2000s goofy charm to it, and graphics-wise, it still looks amazing.

64 and Adventures really are the only two Star Fox games that Ive replayed. Assault is ok. The flight sections are not bad but something about them just felt off to me. The on-foot sections were ass though and made up WAY too much of the game.

Zero, again, is just ok. I do think its way over-hated, but Ive still barely touched it.

Never played Command.

And the original is ok for what it is.

This argument is debunked so often it's not even enjoyable anymore. It's always two elements: who should make it and what should be done.

Nintendo doesn't just look at old games and say "which IP doesn't have a new game, do that one".
Someone has to be passionate for the project.
What game in the past 5 years should they have cancelled work on for one of those three instead? Don't just say "open a new studio with employees!"
In particular, Shigesato Itoi said he would not be involved if there was a fourth game in the Mother series and even fans accept that they shouldn't make it without him. It's not Smash or Mario.

F Zero GX and AX only came about due to a collaboration with SEGA and Namco. It started with thinking about the arcade market potential, which both the latter two were heavily involved in. It wasn't Nintendo R&D1 sitting down and making the game. Bottom line, even GX only happened due to extenuating circumstances. A sequel using the original amusement visions team means convincing SEGA to stop them working on SEGA properties and focus on this Nintendo one. What's the incentive, because huge profits aren't going to happen for the series? "Some fans would like it and you'd make 'some' profit"?

Oh they could hand the IP to the Fast RMX team. Do you keep the GX producer? But even then, the new F Zero would NEED online. 30 online racers in a fast futuristic settings. A significant achievement in itself if Nintendo reached it.
Or what? Make a simple arcade title offline, like X? Make one like the Mode 7 SNES and GBA style that not many want? Make it open world instead? I would love a new game, but I admit convincing Nintendo to make one doesn't seem straight forward.

As for Starfox, we just had one on the Wii U. It's not in the same position as the others. A game series missing one generation isn't the end of the world. They could remaster SF Zero and fix a few problems. I dont consider it to be a totally dormant franchise like the other two you mentioned. Wait till Switch 2 or Switch 3 before we start calling it abandoned.
I'd argue that Starfox 2 being released counts also. It IS a new release after all, in the franchise.

For my two cents, we need a remaster of the original, which has superior atmosphere and music to 64 imo
