That's nothing new. China and India have been fighting (sometimes literally) over Arunachal Pradesh since the PRC became a thing.

Russia actually stole quite a bit of territory from China in the 19th century. (Plus a tiny piece of the northernmost tip of Korea that Russia mistakenly thought they were stealing from China. Korea's government at the time was so isolated that they didn't even notice it had happened until decades later.) The pink in this map used to be Chinese, and in fact was the homeland of the then-ruling Qing dynasty. China has certainly not forgotten about this. Or about the Russian massacres of thousands of Chinese living there. Once Russia has outlived its usefulness to China, I'm sure they'll seek tp recover those territories (and probably grab as much of the rest of the Russian Far East as they can manage).

The adjacent island of Sakhalin also used to be part of China, but was taken from them by Japan in the 17th century. The USSR took it from Japan after WW2, and Russia kept it after the fall of the USSR.

I'm assuming Russia will not like some other country just declaring part of it as it's own?

China has had territorial disputes with India for decades and that didn't derail BRICS. This won't either.

It's truly bizarre the way they do it, too. They've got a mutual agreement to fight with literal sticks instead of guns so that it won't escalate into a full-scale war. So the border units of the Indian and Chinese armies just periodically beat the shit out of each other to show that they still both claim the territory.

yeah, russia isn't in a position to openly challenge china but i am sure they won't just concede the territory either. china has been blatantly trying to steal territory from a ton of nations over the last 10-20 years and are super blatant about it. the philippines got the united states to confirm the mutual defense pact so china isn't likely to fuck around too much more there but they were blatantly trying to take universally recognized filipino islands as well

They've been patient and been playing the game, similar to the Saudi Arabians. We'll see how the world powers are over the next few decades as resources shift and water...well, hopefully we have water.
