Was doing a Walmart delivery order and comparing the Walmart brands to name brands was really eye opening.

Ziploc brand 20 gallon-size bags: $7.15
Great Value brand 40 gallon-size bags: $4.78

Metamucil Daily Fiber Psyllium husk capsules, 100 count: $16.48
Equate brand Daily Fiber Psyllium husk capsules, 160 count: $5.48

2% Milk, Hiland brand: $4.67
2% Milk, Great Value: $2.22

Oreos, family size 19.1oz: $7.38
Great Value Twist and Shouts (wtf at that name), family size 19.1oz: $2.98

Just a few examples. Almost all of this shit is the same exact thing(the Twist and Shouts arent quite as good as Oreos but theyre close enough and the price difference is big enough to offset the slight difference in taste), and in a lot of cases youre paying like half of the name brand for more product.

Why do people pay for the name brands?!

Because sometimes the name brand is a noticeably better product, and I say that as someone that buys a lot of store brand stuff, mostly because HEB products are just really well produced in general.

The key is knowing what you products you should and shouldn't buy name brand, which really depends on the generic goods at wherever you shop.

I thought theyd be ass but decided to buy them with a pack of actual oreos since they were so cheap. Theyre definitely close enough for me at least

Another thing is the Walmart brand sodas like Sams Cola and Dr. Thunder, the cola is noticeably different from Coca Cola but still tastes good, and Thunder tastes pretty much the same as Pepper. Dozen cans of each is a few bucks less than the name brands

Yep. I'd say 70% of the things I buy are generic. Some things are worth the slight hit in quality. Some things aren't. And some times the store Brand costs more, so you have to look out for that as well. Especially when a national sale is going on for the brand.

It really depends on what it is. Like for toilet paper, the value brand stuff isn't good.

I'd say I buy about the same percentage, but I also live in Texas and shop at HEB, where pretty much anyone you talk to will agree the store brand stuff is often waaaaaaaay better than the name brand stuff.

And if you do have something against generic products, have you ever shopped at Trader Joe's? Pretty much everything there is amazing, and for the most part it's all generic stuff with a Trader Joe's label slapped on it.

Always try a store brand and compare it to a name brand. Sometimes the store brand is the same or better, and sometimes the name brand is better.

For example, Kroger brand biscuits taste the same as Philsbury. Meanwhile, Doritos tastes leagues better than the store brands.

When I don't feel like making biscuits, I only buy Krogers. They're the exact same and half the price. Even with the price hikes. I have two rolls in my fridge right now. I make breakfast sandwiches with them.

Also, if you put down some flour and roll them out with a rolling pin then fry them up, they make perfect chalupas. Just fold them over when frying, and they are done in under 2 minutes.

That depends. Some store brand stuff takes like crap. Like Krogers syrup.

And some non brand paper goods are terrible quality.

Store brand usually suits me fine, but soda is the most glaring example I've seen where it's really inferior. I used to get the $0.99 store brand colas when I was working part time and really watching my budget, but Coke Zero really is worth triple the price.

Also, are we considering Costco a "store brand"? Because if so, Kirkland nukes most things in terms of value.

Not for all things, at least in my experience. You cannot comvince me to buy crappy toilet paper like Scotts. I also find that Bounty is better for cleaning up liquid spills than pretty much every off-brand else I've tried (albeit, I picked up some rolls of an offbrand from Aldi, so I'll see how those work).

Also, coffee and olive oil. Off-brand coffee tastes fucking rancid. If you just want cooking olive oil then it doesn't really matter, but if you want OVO you really have to go with imported Italian stuff. California Olive Ranch is an acceptable substitute.
