Sometimes. And it's not based on anything, I just sometimes remember to and others don't.

I used to never tip on to gos, but I had some friends who were bartenders/servers are restos bitch about that, so I decided to start doing it during covid.

In my experience, places with tip jars at the register are generally expensive. At a local place a bacon cheeseburger will come to around $10 not including anything else and it's not exactly huge. I don't put anything in the jar, and who knows how the person emptying the jar actually divides it up.

It should be called a guilt jar.

Have you guys ever experienced that one tool who is friends with the owner who makes it a scene to put money in the tip jar to subtly gesture to you to do the same?

I just grab my food and state, "thank you and have a good day".

do you count food to go as carryout?

If it is a halfway decent restaurant and we have a big order, then yes. Putting the whole thing together and making sure it is correct deserves a little something.

If its fast food... no

It depends on how much work goes into putting the order together. If its Little Caesars, then I dont tip. They increased the price from $5 to $8 and grabbing a pizza takes no effort. Why would I add extra money into the price when they increased the price by so much?

if it's a local joint sure.

If it's a place that dismantled their dine in service post-covid and now the same employees that used to make minimum wage plus tips now only make minimum wage because nobody tips togo, sure.

delivery chains naw, i am going out of my way to come to your store and pick this up myself specifically to save money on delivery.

full service dine in joints where a host that's paid substantially more than the servers handles most of the to gos? eh if i'm feeling generous.

Counter service joints where it all goes to the restaurant slush fund? laaaawlz EAD.

You're right, it does. And most people do indeed not tip at all for it.

That's why while the servers at my work make 10.5/hr, the togo people make 16.5/hr.

When we DON'T have a to go person on? Maybe a server did it between tables. or the bartender. More often than not it's the manager on duty. Majority of the time it's a mix of EVERYBODY. A manager double checked each box was right as it hit the window, a server bagged it. the bartender saw you at the door and grabbed it for you. Your dollar likely went to the store slush fund.

I order carryout so I don't have to tip. Putting food together and into a bag is literally the bare minimum responsibility of doing the job. I'm not tipping someone just because all they essentially did was show up to work and clock in.
