If asked/pressed, most people I've encountered are very upfront over the preferential treatment they give to those in their close circle compared to that which they give to outsiders. Some will even let you know about it without actually having to ask them. Here, I'll prove my own point. I'm not even a pet/animal person, but if I was and I did have a pet, you bet your ass I'd save them over some stranger's baby.
