About 15 years ago, I (white guy) was smoking weed with my co-worker (black guy) in the empty late night parking lot after work. Suddenly theres a big spotlight on us and a cop car pulled up. The cops were like step out of the car and we both start to get out and suddenly theyre like whoa, not you, HIM. I thought they were gonna beat and/or kill my friend right then and there. With me they were so soft and delicate like hey man we cant arrest you for having the stuff, we can arrest you for lying and with him they were like WE KNOW YOU FUCKING HAVE IT, SHOW US THE WEED RIGHT NOW and my friend showed them his empty little box with weed residue. And he basically took the fall and said only he was smoking it not me. I passed the sobriety test (even though I was baked out of my mind) and they arrested him. I used my money to bail him out later and luckily it ended up just being a misdemeanor that was dropped eventually.

I live in Japan. I get the gaijin treatment often.

Keep in mind, it is more ignorance, rather than the violence type.

(I'll preface this with I'm half Italian-half Puerto Rican but basically look "white")

When I was in High School I worked at an amusement park and worked the 4pm-Midnight shift every Friday and Saturday, as did a female co-worker of mine (she is black). She did not have a drivers license yet so her mom would give her a ride to work and I would give her a ride home because she only lived 15 minutes away from me, and 5 minutes from the park.

Between cleanup and hanging out, we usually didn't leave work till close to 1am, and I was parked in front of her house (a predominately black neighborhood) and a police car approached from behind us and turned on his lights. Mind you we were both still in out work uniforms (matching Black jeans and a bright blue shirt), but the officer questioned us like we were casing the neighborhood. Asked for our IDs, and when he noticed we were literally right in front of her house, said to her "I suggest you go home". He then looked at me and said "And I suggest you drive yourself home. You're in the wrong color to be in a neighborhood like this at a time like this".

Crazy thing is, for the weeks following, he would drive past her house EVERY Friday and Saturday night when I was dropping her off. So I'm not sure what I was more bothered by, the fact that he originally gave us a tough time, or he continuously cockblocked me for WEEKS because I was trying to get with this girl.

It wasnt necessarily huge, as it was indoors. Most of the rides were kiddie rides, other than bumper cars.

But it had a ton of arcade games, along with laser tag.

Biggest perks was that we got free tokens by the handful whenever we wanted, and the whole staff was basically 15-20 years old, so work was basically a giant hangout.

A new guy I worked with back when I was doing charity shop volunteering asked me in a really judgmental-sounding way, "Are you FROM HERE?".

Which is funny because I'm white and have lived in the UK for all my life, I just look less white than most other white people I guess.

Do you see any irony in arguing about something for an entire day while calling out other people for having old accounts and nothing better to do?

Also, nobody believes this is your first account. I'd be shocked if CE has seen a legitimate new user in at least 5 years

My first year in my theatre department, we produced a show where one white character told a racist joke to another white character. In the context of the story, it showed that the first character was a shitty person, but word got out about it, and the black student organization accused the department of being racist.

So that was fun

Yikes. Sucks that you got wrapped into that while having zero control over the content. Was the story actually about fighting racism or did they just throw that in to be edgy? There's definitely better ways to establish a character is a shitty person. And if the other character didn't immediately denounce it then it's not clear to the audience if they are establishing they are shitty characters or establishing that racist jokes are no big deal.

That just makes the audience sound stupid. Like if they don't immediately get a clear answer they're gonna rage. Not everyone out there is twitter (I hope).

How would a racist write the scene? How would someone whose totally not racist but likes racist jokes write the scene? How was the scene written? Is there a notable difference?

Theres also the question of why. A joke at the expense of a woman who had a miscarriage is going to be edgy to a lot and strike real too close to home for others. Its same with racist jokes. Was it relevant to the plot or were we spreading racist jokes just to be edgy. Its just a play is an excuse very similar to its just a joke.

These are a lot of questions upon which your statements were contingent, but that doesn't adjust that "immediate denouncement or ragequit" is dumb. There are hundreds of plots where racism is going be established for something other than loledge or actual, literal racism.

Which is why I asked in 2 separate posts if the racism was plot relevant. Immediate denouncement isnt needed every time but its often a good idea. If telling a racist joke in private is a sign of a shitty character then what is writing a racist joke for a play a sign of? It could be a deeper play that uses it well but its just as likely that its causing more harm than good. People who got offended but never saw the play heard about it somehow. Theres a good chance it was either from offended viewers who repeated the negative experience or from racist viewers who liked the joke and repeated it. Neither is a great outcome from a play.

I don't experience it very often, but last year some crazy troglodyte was screaming racist and misogynistic slurs and trying to pick fights with anyone who wasn't white in a parking lot. A racist joke is a racist joke, so out of context, yeah, it's offensive. But it wasn't played for a laugh; the audience was supposed to be offended by it, not amused

Only time I maybe experienced racism was when I visited Japan. I remember walking past a woman with a baby carriage. She seemed to put her arm protectively over the carriage as I passed by, like she was worried I would do something to the baby. I later heard there is an urban legend in Japan that foreigners will snatch babies

So what if instead of making a joke at the expense of black people it made light of the Holocaust? Its not wrong to have a bad character say a bad thing but most writers avoid using Nazi rhetoric if the story is not about fighting antisemitism. For a long time writers have avoided Klan rhetoric coming from protagonist but keeping it out of antagonist too unless its a story about fighting racism has been a more recent cultural change. If changing the antagonist from a racist to a regular jerk doesnt change the story then might as well keep the Klan rhetoric out of the story completely. Sucks that you got caught up in that through no fault of your own.
