It's not a chain but I work at a major State University and we have a health and wellness/recreation center that only students, faculty, and alumni can use and it is huge, state of the art, and excellent. It has everything that all the university's sports teams use.

It absolutely puts to shame any chain gym or city facility or YMCA I have ever been in.

I've been to Gold's Gym and Planet Fitness. I like Gold's variety in equipment and I like PF's pricing & proximity to where I live.

Definitely area dependent, but I think VASA has the best weight lifting equipment and it is only $40 a month. It is a better lifting gym than Lifetime and 1/3 the cost

The only good gym experiences I've had are

College rec center at 6 AM because most students were still asleep

Apartment complex gym because it was under utilized

I've had a PF membership and even at 5 am I'd still be stuck weighting for certain dumbbells or a bench

Planet Fitness is perfect fine for "regular" people.

Assuming you're not looking to lift an insane amount of weight. Although if you were, you'd probably be part of a larger weight lifting gym already.

As long as you're not going during peak times (usually 6pm-9pm) most aren't even all that crowded.

I prefer working out late at night, so the place if virtually empty when I go.
