In Rolex case it probably is hundreds if not low thousands. They have an extremely high quality control and throw away a lot of watches off the assembly line. Sometimes they come with diamonds and shit.

Even still margins of several thousands per watch is still a lot.

It depends on the watch. I'm sure some only cost hundreds to make, but with Rolex or any other that are made with precious gem and/or metals, they do actually cost upwards of thousands to make.

Yeah, expensive watches seem to actually be expensive to make.

This isn't $400 Nikes that were manufactured for $8.

As far as I know luxury goods have around a gross margin of 60% or more. So whatever that ends up being.

i don't think swiss watches are stupid. But rolexes might be the most overpriced swiss watches for what you're getting.

It's not stupid to like nice things.

A good Swiss watch is manufactured to extremely high standards with high quality materials, and the design can be beautiful. They are a joy to own.

As a rough guide, manufacturing costs for items like these are around a third of the retail price. They are relatively small volume, high margin products.

I have a couple that are passed down through family.

Nothing special. Value in the hundreds, not thousands.

have you ever had these old watches serviced? i know that rolex recommends a servicing like every 10 yrs. Maybe most rolex owners don't do this. And most of their watches still run fine.

Yeah, expensive watches seem to actually be expensive to make.

Theyre pretty complicated machines and likely require a highly paid specialist to make them.

They were serviced before being passed on, but yeah, it's an unspoken condition of ownership so I will at some point.
