Depends which one has the exclusive pokemon that I like.

I dont know how you determine that red was the main one. I played red back in the day, but all my friends had blue.

As if I would care about that.

I base my decision soly on the cover pokemon, after a deep and professional discussion with my brother so we don't get the same.

Usually main, but if there was a second set of paired games within the same gen, I would usually play the alternate for the second set.

For instance, I played Ruby and Leaf Green (although to be fair, my decision on that one was swayed on the basis that Green was a "new" version for the English players)
also Diamond and Soul Silver
also Sun and Ultra Moon

I think it's whichever one is first named in the pair.

Red and Blue/Green.
Gold and Silver.
Ruby and Sapphire.
Diamond and Pearl.
Black and White.
X and Y.
Sun and Moon.
Sword and Shield.
Scarlet and Violet.

Anyway for me I did Silver, Crystal, Emerald, Pearl, White. Haven't bought a game from gen 6 onwards because Showdown exists and the actual quality of the story mode has been infamously lacking, to say the least.

Yes it is just that easy

My favourite Pokmon games are Crystal and Emerald, so I get to mostly sidestep the issue. When I returned to the series for ORAS, I went for AS since Kyogre is so damn cool, and eventually filled the Pokdex anyway.

You can argue that Red and Blue are actual characters and since Red is the protagonist then that's the "canon" version.

Pokemon has taken the multiverse angle since at least X and Y so it's plausible to assume a continuity between versions.

This was also the case with Gold until gen 4 made the boneheaded decision to call him Ethan. The rivals name is Silver so Gold made way more sense.

Whichever box art legendary looks cooler.

Gen 4 characters aren't even necessarily the same characters. The male PCs might look similar, but the female PC in Crystal is explicitly different from the one in HGSS (and imo, had a cooler design...)

Violet was the first time my main game was the second one of the pair.

Hmm weird. I always went with the pokemon on the front of the box, but It appears that even though I get all each generation the first and the main ones I play(not counting the 3rd in each gen) are the alternative ones.

White
Black 2
Y
Moon/Ultra
Sword
Violet

Other than Blue (Red was sold out), I went off of which box Pokmon I liked more. Usually its the alternative, but not always.
