not a doctor but

i thought going to a chiro would be good for my back (it wasn't). He put me on a 24-week plan despite the fact i told him i had enough benefits to pay for 4 sessions.

his child was running around the office while i was being worked on. he grabbed my $700 prescription sunglasses and bent them into a straight line. Luckily they didn't break, but i don't think the dude woulda paid.

Oh, and he brought up the word "toxins" at least twice per session. I quit after the 2nd one and used my paramedical on other things (physio)

I got a kidney stone that was too big to pass naturally, so I needed surgery. It was the week of Christmas, though, so everyone from urology was on vacation. After making me sit and stew for a week, it eventually got bad enough where I was infected and had a temperature of 105, so they had a cancer doctor go in and take it out.

He had used the equipment before, but never laser blasted a kidney stone with it. He...did not do a very good job. Tore me all up inside and I had all kinds of internal bleeding. Bleeding cause clots, clots can clog up your plumbing, and once again I got this guy going up there to do a thing he'd never done before.

Only this time it was an emergency spur of the moment type thing, so I was completely awake for it. Pain beyond pain, I have never experienced anything like it. It was almost dissociative, like I could feel myself outside of myself, which was just a big ball of pain. I know that sounds like nonsense, but it's the best I can describe it. After what felt like an eternity everything went white and I literally passed out from the intensity of it.

I've had 4-5 panic attacks at doctors.
The doctor was never to blame in any way.
It was miserable, but there are definitely worse settings for that to happen in.

I feel like the fluorescent lights is a trigger, I fainted at the hospital on a field trip as a child, hospitals always make me uncomfortable.

Only about terrible waiting times / schedules.

Doctor: "Well, please come back in 2 weeks, so we can check it again, and decide if it needs surgery or not."

Receptionist outside: "Next free slot would be in 3 months".

Had to wait for and jump at a short term cancellation.

Well...these make me feel a little better about my recent medical ills. I was hoping people would be having better luck out there. It's kind of shocking that people can get a degree, go to medical school, take tests, and remain employed while being like that. >.<

Yeah chiro is quackery. Also they REALLY don't want you to look at the studies showing you're magnitudes more likely to get a stroke after chiropractic neck treatment.

Yes. My mother suffered from (i.e. was gradually dying from) vascular dementia, and her doctor was supposed to organize hospital transport for her to have an important scan. Short story: her doctor didn't do it and my mother missed her appointment. I went there to complain; her doctor just shrugged, told me it wasn't her job anyway and it was my responsibility instead; then she turned her back and ignored me. Well, she tried, but I made it impossible. They had to call the police in the end. Probably very wise.

Yup, I suffer from a condition called Hidradentis Suppativa (not life threatening, just chronic, often painful and unpleasant), when I was first diagnosed I was referred by my GP, given two appointments at the hospital, one with a surgeon, one with a skin specialist. Now being early 20 something at the time and had nearly really had much dealings with hospitals, only really at the Doctors I naively assumed these two Doctors would be on the same page, do things like share notes and confer, and that if I'm being offered something it's what these two Doctors have come up with together.

What actually happens is, I see the first Doctor, the surgeon, now as I've later become aware, he wasn't really aware of what this condition is, so we talked, he offered me an operation, given it would mean a 4 week recovery period (that afterwards, became six, then eight weeks before I was even allowed back to work) I was given a bit of time to think, in the follow up appointment I said yes. Basically, he goes at my armpits with a scalpel, cutting out flesh that ultimately did nothing to help me in the long term, gave me the most miserable six months of my life as it healed, and to top it off, about four months after the operation I finally get to see the skin specialist, he's very aware of the condition, very open that it doesn't really get cured, the best you can hope for is a remission of outbreaks but when he looks at the state of me, with under arm areas that look like I barely survived a fight with a bear, he shakes his head, says "I wish you'd seen me first" and calls in one of his colleagues to examine it and takes a few pictures. I assume somewhere in NHS records, I'm now the case study for why this shouldn't happen. It's probably for the best that it ****ing broke me and it took a long time to get my head straight, because I don't relish how that would have all played out if it had manifested as anger instead at that moment.

I sliced my hand open and needed stitches. I went to the ER and my nurse was nice as can be, but the doctor was disrespectful. Prior to stitching my hand, he asked a bunch of questions off a sheet. Pretty standard stuff, but he asked several of them with this overtly derisive tone and look on his face. Just being a real asshole. Asked if I was on drugs, if I had any additional knife wounds, and if I had any gunshot wounds. I said Yes, but my insurance doesnt cover gunshot wounds so please just fix my hand. He cut the shit and stitched me up, but I was really displeased with his treatment.

I took my gf to the same ER, but had different staff tending to us. She was feeling very weak and ill. We didnt even get to see a doctor, just a nurse. Her nurse was very dismissive and ran some tests. Basically, she drug tested my gf and sent us home. We ended up going to a different ER an hour away where she was diagnosed with having dangerously low levels of some thing(s), I dont recall, that was causing her to pass out. They ran some tests and identified the problem right away. They were glad we came in and were shocked at the previous hospitals treatment of her.

I went to one that did payment plans for people without insurance in some small town about 30 mins away and the doctor was mainly a total ass. He has an assistant in training where he would watch her do her assessment and then ask her condescending questions in front of me if she was sure she was doing it right and then being passive aggressive towards her telling her she knows what she's doing so she doesn't have to ask him. I was there for neck pain that lasted a month and mainly wanted a referral to a specialist. He was felt my neck and had me look left and right and then told me there was nothing wrong with me and that I needed to stretch and exercise more (I'm not overweight). He said he didn't want to refer me to a specialist and waste my money just to find out there's nothing wrong with me because in his eyes a 30 year old is too young for neck pain.

His receptionist billed me $250 for the waste of time and I paid her $20 in cash and promised to pay the rest 2 weeks later. I had no intention of paying him any more after the $20 after all that lol. They stopped sending letters a year later. I went and got X-rays on my neck anyways and found out I had signs of arthritis in my neck and should consider physical therapy.

It's what got me into social work, technically.

I was in a medical detox facility, supposed to be a ten day stay while you look for other rehab.

The "look for other rehab" thing was very much not the facility's plan, this place exists only to fill beds.

Anyway, you had to go in for a session with the doctor every day, since it's a medical detox.

While I was there, I made friends with this guy Henry. Mid-fifties, had a great job, alcohol brought him down, now he's unhoused. Not an uncommon story in a place like that.

Said doctor told him on my third day that he is a "worthless old man," direct quote.

I reacted badly, tried to get him to complain, he wouldn't since he knew it was pointless, I tried to complain and they said it didn't matter.

So I checked myself out on the spot and got into social work education because that shit wasn't going to fly.

I was going to say no, but then reading some responses I started recalling a bunch of times.

- I was 9 years old, we were in a car wreck. I was severely injured, turned out to be most injured of us all, and my brother was medflighted away if that's any indication. Anyway, after exiting the vehicle, I could barely walk but managed to sit next to my brother at the side of the road. Police and ambulances were everywhere, I was hurt and scared, then a cop came over and started fussing at me to leave and go to my parents. I told him they'd been taken in the ambulance... I had been left behind. I guess they thought I was just random kid sitting in the wreckage crying?

- Next one is the ambulance itself. After it came back, they just opened the door and were motioning for me to climb in. I could hardly move but had to climb in the back myself as they were worried about the other people inside. Once I got in I just found a spot and laid down.

- Then the hospital. Idk if it was the cop, or the rescue squad people, but somewhere along the way there was a misunderstanding. They thought I hadn't been hurt. So I was just kept for observation and sent home asap.

- Repeated trips back to the hospital over the course of the next week because I was in excruciating pain constantly. They never bothered giving me any type of exam beyond checking for a fever and listening to my heart. Got sent away several times and told I was just acting up because I was upset. Then finally got a real doctor that was concerned and ordered a bunch of tests. After finding nothing at first, they ordered an exploratory surgery and discovered that my intestines had been severed by the seat belt impacting my belly when he crashed. It hit so hard that it damaged my spine and obviously muscle and nerve damage too. But it had gone untreated for a week, so i was developing gangrene from my dead intestines. I was rushed to have them removed, and was told afterwards that it was almost too late. That I wouldn't have survived another day.

- The nurse for the exploratory surgery. I was scared and asked if the surgery was dangerous. At that point they didn't know if the actual injury, so she was responding about the basic barely invasive exploratory one... And she told me that yeah, it could kill me. So that freaked me out just as they were about to put me under. >_>'

- Physical therapist. Due to the damage done from the accident and recovering from surgery, I needed physical therapy to walk again. Remember, it's a spinal cord injury and muscle/nerve damage, not just recovering from surgery. They were pushing me so hard to do things I literally couldn't do. It wasn't motivational to encourage me to do more, but was berating for not being able to perform certain tasks properly. Fortunately, mom was also in physical therapy for her injuries and we were scheduled together, so she saw how I was being treated and we opted to just stop. I did eventually mostly recover on my own but some things can still be difficult for me. It's really easy to hurt my back, and I get a lot of pain still sometimes even 31 years later.

- My psychiatrist.
Unrelated to the other stuff. Due to a really unfortunate life, and bad circumstances all around, I developed deep depression and anxiety... Who would've guessed, right? Anyway, I decided therapy was worth a shot. It was not, he was one of the worst people I've ever met in my life. Was always taking calls with other clients during our sessions, kept insulting me rather than helping. He once asked what my biggest life goal was, and I said to be a father. He scoffed at me and told me to give up on that because he thinks I'd be a bad father since I didn't have a good one. That was the breaking point, I went to end my life that weekend... But decided at the last second that I should at least bring it up to him and see what he says... "I can see why you'd want to." That was it. Nothing else. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I dropped him a few weeks later after he yelled at me over something simple and meaningless.

Yes, actually a couple of weeks ago.

I went to a dermatologist to get a biopsy done on a little mole on my neck (benign - nothing to worry about). The doctor said she was going to numb it, but I swear I felt the cutting the whole time, and it fucking hurt.

So then they have to make sure it doesnt bleed all over the damn place. Well, I pay my co pay, and get into my car where I see blood on the driver side window. Look down at my left arm, and I swear to god it looked like I was a gun shot victim with how much blood there was. I immediately put my hand to my neck and ran back into the office incredulous.

I get up there leaking all over the place and not only did the front desk receptionists not recognize me or see a guy bleeding all over their floor, but the two assholes standing in front of me wouldnt even get out the damn way while I was having a medical emergency.

Another doctor saw me, properly closed the thing and cleaned me up, but I had to throw the shirt I was wearing away, it was beyond saving. The second doctor explained that while it may have appeared dramatic, I was fine and didnt lose nearly as much blood as I thought. But when you see blood on the window, the shirt, and you put your hand to the wound and its literally dripping down your back, man thats scary.

I had one doctor tell me to take 800mg of ibuprofen for pain management.

I told him I take small doses(200mg typically) and rely more on tylenol because Ibuprofen causes me reflux and stomach pain if I take much.

His response "Thats a baby dose. Take 800mg every six hours"

Bitch I have noticeable side effects on half or sometimes even a quarter of the dose. You really had no other advice?

I'm ~150lb btw so I'm not a big guy who might need higher dosages or anything.

Only once, and it was a few months ago.

I was having a heart issue. I was referred to a cardiologist. He seemed like a really experienced and respected one. My family doctor already ordered the basic tests, a stress test, had me wear a heart monitor, and even ordered an electrocardiogram. My family doctor said to take this stuff when I went to see the heart doctor.

I show up at the heart doctors place. I finally got to see him, and he left like 5 minutes in to chat with somebody dropping off something. It was pretty disrespectful. Then I started telling him about the test results I had with me and he got mad. He was like why did you get those, I didn't order those. I'll have to do them all again myself. He wouldn't look at them. I can see wanting to do your own tests but the fact he wouldn't look was weird. He basically told me to leave at that point and schedule the tests with him.

I tell his nurse, I want the test asap. I tell her I'm going out of town for about 10 days on a work trip and would not be available on certain days. She types for a second and then gives me a date right in the middle of the 10 days. I was dumbfounded. I told her again I was out of town at that time. She then said something like, well that's all we have until for another two months.

I never went back. I called my family doctor he sent me to somebody else. Much better experience and turned out not much was wrong at all.

Did a stint in the psych ward some five years ago. Long story short, I was voluntarily committed and was supposed to be in there for 3 days. I was there for 6. One "doctor", and I use that term very loosely, wasn't keen on listening to what I had to say. Useless. The next day, I had a different "doctor", who also couldn't care less about me. The day I was supposed to be released was a holiday, and said that the original doctor had to sign off on me leaving, but couldn't because of said holiday. Also blamed me for my condition and situation, saying "You came to us for help". Bullshit.

It may have been a mixed blessing that both of these "doctors" were via telehealth. There's a lot more to the story than just what I posted, but I was not in a good headspace then and would've jumped at the chance to throttle both of them.

I don't know if reporting doctors like that does any good unless you can prove malpractice. I'm sure the doctor didn't put that in her medical records, and without solid proof, the hospital/admin/whoever won't take you seriously.
