* Kill off one of your beloved mascot characters
* Make their children the main characters, each of them inheriting roughly half of the original character's moveset
* Make one of them a rampaging, genocidal misanthrope and the other one a bland naive nice girl who inevitably becomes manipulated into playing host to the main bad guy
* Kick another three characters out of the roster and replace them with mediocre "next generation" characters for no reason
* Cut the proposed story mode down to a quarter of the originally intended length, leaving it nonsensical and threadbare
* Introduce a bevy of new characters who contribute next to nothing to the main plot, like a wolf guy with a crystal ball, but who are prominent figures in the story anyway
* Make one of the more gimmicky fighters in the series one of the main antagonists with none of the presentational presence or gameplay heft as the last ones
* Turn the other main antagonist into a clone fighter, ala Mokujin from Tekken, who also has a low chance of using the killed off character's moveset at complete random
* Make most of the DLC mediocre character creation items, except for one fighter who looks and plays like a stupid asshole

Like yeah, it was cool that "Everyone was here", but not when everyone has the exact same fatalities. IIRC the gameplay sucked too.

Street Fighter 5 was a confusing, compromised mess that took years to really shape up. The fourth game was a huge return to form after a controversial third entry, and the sixth game is probably the biggest that the game has been since Street Fighter 2 - so yeah, good example. I still don't think it hits the same low point as SCV though, since even at its lowest, it was eventually vindicated by DLC - V just sucked ass and died a pauper's death.

Tekken 4.

What a travesty.

Tekken 4 was actually my first Tekken. The way that it and Tekken 5 did their individual character stories is actually really good.

Playing it today, it's pretty slow and the characters play like big, inflatable parade floats. I kinda dig its silly, dingy sort of vibe - what with Paul's loose Nickelback hair and Combot replacing Mokujin as the ditto fighter. I also thought it had a very interesting story mode thing with the Mishimas, with their arcade paths veering into a true ending - it actually did raise the stakes in my opinion and put the lore on a pedestal in a way that was like crack cocaine to my imaginative childhood brain.

Tekken 4 has its downsides, but I feel like it added a lot to the Tekken formula and story and what it did right was really expanded upon by Tekken 5. There's enough good in Tekken 4 (and enough personal nostalgia) that I wouldn't count SCV and T4 in the same breath.

Tekken 6, on the other hand - the fuck was up with the beat em up style of the main campaign? What the fuck did that game do to the lore? I've got a lot less love for Tekken 6 than I do for Tekken 4.

Man, you could have said any 3D Mortal Kombat until 9. That game is a ridiculous step up in quality.

I did play Armageddon a little bit though. The arcade endings are just scrolling text, the character models and sound effects all feel outdated and the gameplay is jank as hell in that 3D Mortal Kombat way. The Fatality system was also misaimed, I agree.

That being said, MK4 is a jank machine. And look at this (safe for work) Fatality from Deadly Alliance, where Quan Chi just... stretches your neck up like rubber:

It is a victim of its ambition, and it's probably one of the least well put-together MK games in general. I'll take it.

Yeah, I thought about MK4 (and MK vs DC) as well, but I barely played those so I didn't really have a personal opinion to go off of. Though I'd probably still put 4 over Armageddon solely because some of the endings (like the Jax ending) were pretty entertaining.

As for Deadly Alliance and Deception, looking back those were bad too but my nostalgia left me with a better opinion of them since I played those while I was still a dumb kid that could find enjoyment in bad games. Whereas when Armageddon came I was at the point where I was much more critical of games.

I watch a fair bit of Maximillian Dood, and he talks a lot about the state of the game and the building blocks that were there, even if the game itself ended up being a compromised mess. I'd put it up there with SCV with the terrible development cycle, reused assets and dogshit story - Max has a campaign playthrough and the first leg of the story is literally all the heroes showing up with a quip, other character addresssing them by name and responding with their own quip.

They also used a bunch of models from MvC3 in the end as well, like Dante and stuff. It's kind of funny because before Ultimate came out, MvC3 was controversial in its own right. But yeah, MvCI is up there with terrible, hackjob fighting game sequels.

i guess you wouldn't have felt the travesty of 4 if you didn't come dirctly from 3 or TTT... same way i guess people wouldn't have felt the travesty of SC5 if it also were their first SC.

and i kinda liked T4 but man did they change it up too much for it to have any lasting power least of all with the abysmal amount of characters(compared to TTT).
